Day 1: my sleep window is midnight to 6am.

At 430am, loud thunderstorms woke me up (or I just woke up). In the future, do I just turn over and attempt to go back to sleep until the end of my sleep window at 6am when my alarm sounds or do I get out of bed?

I went to the bathroom and then moved to the couch in the living room and attempted to go back to sleep there. After 45 minutes, I turned on the lights and read until 6am.

      Thanks, Michael

        Hi Horadedormir

You should do what you feel most comfortable with. The idea is to do whatever keeps you feeling calm and helps pass the time while you are awake. If you wake up in the night (for whatever reason) if you feel sleepy then stay in bed, relax and see if you go back to sleep. If you don’t, after say 20 mins (which is a guess as it’s not a good idea to keep checking the clock), then do something you enjoy. If you like reading, then do that. If you like watching tv, then do that. There are no rules. The important thing is not to struggle with sleep.
During the day try not to focus on sleep, don’t analyse it, or measure how much you’ve had. Try to get on with life regardless and accept that for a while your sleep may be disrupted but it’s temporary.
Insomnia becomes a problem when you focus on sleep more than life.
        Good luck.

          Hi Bronte,

Thanks for your response. That was helpful. I might have missed that part of what to do if you wake up in the middle of the sleep window. I’ve got the idea now. Just stay calm, do relaxing things and enjoy the time awake. If I get sleepy enough to fall back asleep that’s great too.

          I appreciate it 🙂

In future, you probably won’t care.
You are only truly “cured” when these things don’t bother you. Not caring whether sleeping well or bad. You simply don’t care.

The key to sleeping well is letting go of complete control. You can’t control when thunderstorms happen either or when or what woke you up.

Thank you for the reminder that’s it’s all about letting go of control around sleep.
