I thought it might be fun to list all the countries we have visited (or want to visit) – they say travel nourishes the soul, so let's see how well nourished we all are!
I have been very lucky – as a child I was taken on a lot of overseas trips. These included holidays to The Gambia, Tunisia, Denmark, France, Fuerteventura, Formentera, Ibiza and Cyprus.
When I 'grew up' (at least in the eyes of the law), I visited Belgium, Hong Kong, Australia (where I lived and worked for a year), New Zealand, Canada (lived and worked here for a year, too), Corfu, Italy, Czech Republic and Iceland.
I was born in the UK and lived there until the summer of 2008 when I moved to the US to live permanently. I'm currently in New York, but am hoping to move to the West Coast at some stage this year.
Right, now over to you!

February 1, 2010 at 4:05 pm #9296I was born and raised in the far west of Texas, but we moved to Cincinnati when I was 14, and I consider it my hometown. The husband was stationed in Mannheim, Germany for four years. We traveled to many cities within the country, but unfortunately we never had the chance to travel elsewhere, which I highly regret.
Fortunately, I recently discovered I have a half brother who is German! That gives me a perfect excuse to travel that way again, much to my wallet's chagrin. I've never heard of some of the palces you mentioned, Martin, but Australia is high on my list of Places To Go Before I Die.
February 1, 2010 at 5:08 pm #9297I have never been anywhere out of Canada. In Canada I have been to Quebec, NFLD, PEI, NB, I wish to go to Alaska someday.

Australia is beautiful – especially Western Australia, which hardly anyone visits. People tend to hit the East Coast – Sydney, Great Barrier Reef, etc. However, I'd recommend flying into Perth or Darwin, getting a car and just driving all the way along the West Coast. You'll see more kangaroos than people. You'll have a beautiful reef all to yourself (no tourists) and you can swim right out to it, rather than having to get a boat as you do for the Great Barrier Reef.

I loved my time in Canada. I spent about 6 months in Toronto working, then travelled to Quebec City, Ottawa, Banff, Edmonton, Vancouver and Victoria. Victoria was amazing – I wasn't really blown away by Vancouver, but a short hop on a ferry makes a world of difference.
I couldn't resist going up to Alaska, either and managed to do a good tour combining planes, trains and automobiles, criss-crossing Alaska and the Yukon in Canada! It was an adventure!

I am beyond envious of you!
February 1, 2010 at 9:23 pm #9300Wow Martin you are well travelled!
I've been to a few countries too, mostly on holiday but I've worked in France (a placement when I was at Uni) and Poland (where I taught English).
I'll try and do a full list but might miss some countries out…
Ireland (ex Hubby was Irish)
France (Brittany, Paris and Lyon)
Spain (holiday stuff)
Portugal (ditto)
Greece (ditto plus a couple of Islands)
Tunisia (holiday stuff)
Germany (Frankfurt, Berlin, Hamburg)
Poland (Opole, Wroclaw, Krakow)
Belgium (Bruges, Brussels, Spa)
Czech Republic (Prague – beautiful)
Russia (toured but visited Moscow – cried when I walked into Red Square as I'd always wanted to go! and St Petersburg – fantastic)
Morocco (Marrakech – amazing)
Egypt (did a Felucca trip on the Nile – slept on an open deck under the stars)
India (Goa)
Thailand (Bangkok, Chang Mai and other places, including the Bridge over the river Kwai)
Cambodia (harrowing but fascinating)
Bolivia (amazing people, so interesting, but altitude gave me trapped wind LOL)
Peru (trekked part of the way to Macchu Picchu (still can't spell it though!)
Cuba (Havana is fabulous!)
Jamaica (my brother lived there for a while)
USA (well, if you count an 8 hour stopover in Miami LOL)
There are so many more places I'd love to see but at the moment I don't have a valid passport!
February 1, 2010 at 9:31 pm #9301Ah, I forgot to mention Mexico and Brazil on my earlier post! You reminded me that I want to see more of Central and South America. You've got a good list of destinations there – did you every keep travel journals? I never did and kind of regret it now.

I did the first couple of days on some of the trips and then tailed off. I wish I'd kept them up, particularly on the Peru/Bolivia trip
February 2, 2010 at 2:19 pm #9303Why did you tail off? Not interested in doing the group thing? Prefer independent exploration?

February 2, 2010 at 4:43 pm #9304I mean I tailed off on the journals 🙂
As soon as I'm able to, I'll be off on another trip with the same company I did some of the others with http://www.explore.co.uk
February 2, 2010 at 4:50 pm #9305Ah! Now I get it 😉
Thanks for the link – I love to look and imagine, if I can't do the real thing!

February 3, 2010 at 2:30 am #9306What a fascinating read and what an interesting bunch!
I lived in the same house on Long Island until my parents moved to Naples, Florida when I was a senior in college. Once I was on my own, I took every possible opportunity to travel, mostly through Mexico and Central and South America. I was living in Houston when I got married and moved to Edmonton, Alberta. From there we lived in Venezuela for two years and Singapore for two years. While we lived in Venezuela (which was extremely difficult) we travelled twice a month to Aruba to buy groceries. We took advantage of our time in Asia and travelled to Bangkok, Kuala Lumpur, Taipei, Tokyo and Hong Kong. Our favorite place to visit was Perth, Australia. We have also taken vacations to the Bahamas, Bermuda and St. Croix.
One trip I don't recommend was a five week train trip through eastern and western Europe with my mother-in-law. 🙄 We made stops in Frankfurt, Berlin, Hamburg, Geneva, Paris, Lourdes, Vienna, Prague and Warsaw.
We have been back in the Edmonton area since July. One Sunday in December, it had the dubious distinction of being the second coldest spot on the planet after a God forsaken spot in Siberia. 😮
I'm kind of over Canada and hope by July we'll be back in Houston. 😛
February 6, 2010 at 1:17 pm #9307Wow! You've been all over! I bet you have great pictures! I've never gotten to travel much, which is probably the reason I moved the UK! Been all over England and Wales, Dublin once, Paris once. That's pretty much it! eastern Minnesota… Wisconsin… Seattle twice. The furthest south I've been is Chicago (not very). I thought I'd get to travel more living in Europe, but I've been a poor student for most of my time here! Hopefully more in the future!
