Having done some research on this topic, the nearest explanation I can find for this phenomenon seems to be a condition called Autonomous Sensory Meridien Response or “Brain Orgasms”! These can be triggered by external noises or actions, ie. someone writing, monotone auditory sounds or indeed whispering. People report a tingling sensation in the head and feeling sleepy. there are websites on YouTube that play whispered video material for sleep and meditative/relaxation purposes. Could this possibly help some people with their sleep problems? Unfortunately I have been unable to locate any actual recorded CD's containing whispering and to use YouTube would mean having a laptop or computer close to your bedside.
I read about this phenomenon recently – it tends to affect me when I see people working on something that requires a lot of concentration; for example, watching people paint, draw or make something.
I guess if you were to create a CD of whispering with the aim of helping people sleep, you need to be careful about what the people whisper about – you don't want it to be something you end up listening intently to!
