      Hi,

I have had chronic sleep maintenance insomnia for the past 6 months. I have tried CBTi techniques without success and am keeping a sleep diary. I average 4 to 4.5 hours of sleep per night.

I am able to fall asleep in a couple of minutes after putting my head on the pillow without any trouble. And this time to get to sleep is not affected by what I do leading up to my bed time. I do not need to follow any special routines in initially falling asleep. I then wake up in the middle of the night and usually unable to fall back asleep again after that. I do not have any stresses or worries when I wake up. No matter what I do I am not sleepy again until the next night.

In the daytime I feel so fatigued, exhausted, tired and low on energy. And throughout the day I do not feel sleepy at all.. I have no urge to nod off or fall asleep at anytime. It is like my eyes are wired open and my body/mind just does not want to sleep.

Can anyone explain why I do not feel sleepy during the daytime? What is going on? Is this normal? Before I had insomnia I was able to feel sleepy during the daytime.

      Thanks.

If you don’t feel sleepy during the day then you are either getting enough sleep, or arousal is high enough to suppress sleepiness.

What kind of things do you do during the day? Does how you feel tend to vary as the day progresses, and does how you feel tend to be influenced by what you’re doing?

What is it about the idea of not feeling sleepy during the day that has you concerned?
