I often have trouble with not only falling asleep but staying asleep. I’ve had a lot of anxiety in recent years, and I think it contributes to my interrupted sleep. I am always tired, but lately it has worsened.

I found Insomnia Coach recently after I almost fainted at work and felt extremely tired and moderately dizzy for several weeks (and counting). My doctor told me he thought my poor sleep had caught up with me. I am grateful to have found Insomnia Coach because I have been desperate to not feel like this. It’s also been hard because, while my husband has been patient, I know he is probably getting impatient at this point with my exhaustion.

On the bright side, I recently underwent a few minor medical procedures to improve breathing through my nose. I suspect my difficulty breathing through my nose, especially at night, caused lighter sleep and more awakenings. I am currently healing from that procedure and am trying to stay positive that it will help— I’ve already noticed improved breathing through my nose.

It’s nice knowing there are people out there that may have gotten over this hump. Hopefully some of you have been able to do so.

Welcome to the forum, Emily — and thank you for your post.

Sleep problems are very common among those with high levels of anxiety, so you certainly are NOT alone.

Has your husband told you that you snore regularly (and loudly)? Has he ever witnessed you gasping during the night or noticed that you temporarily stop breathing during the night?

My husband has actually confirmed with me several times that I do not snore, so at the least I don’t think I have sleep apnea.

Sometimes it is difficult to sleep through the night because I feel like I’m half awake all night. Though, thankfully that only happens every so often.

It sounds as though your arousal system (think of this as the ‘fight or flight’ response) is getting activated at the time when you should be relaxing and ready for sleep. This is quite common among those with insomnia — and is often best addressed using cognitive and behavioral techniques like those used in my insomnia coaching program. Have you looked into CBT-I by any chance?
