I am 68y/o and have not slept well since going off antidepressants 3 months ago. Was on them long term. 30 years. I am also currently finalizing my permanent move from the US to France in Sept. Sleep has been elusive and rare in the last 3 months for the obvious reasons of stress related to the move, I get that. My concern is that the longterm antidepressant usage has really messed up my brain wiring regarding sleep and that is the bigger issue. I will not go back on meds, that’s not an option. Mentally I feel good, my depression is gone. Along with restful sleep too unfortunately. I have not had a truly restorative sleep in months. Any thoughts? Thanks.

        Hi @susank, welcome!

Moving to another country can be a daunting and anxious – also exciting – life event for anyone! Do you feel like some anxiousness about the move could be causing your sleep disruptions? Can you describe an average night for you – what time do you go to bed, what time do you wake in the morning and how many hours do you achieve?

          Thanks for the welcome Scott,
I know the anxiety & stress of my move abroad have a lot to do with my current sleep issues for sure, but I have had insomnia issues before. In the last few months I typically go to bed around 10pm, toss & turn for a few hours, drift off for a few hours if I’m lucky, then wake up around 6am. Some nights I don’t drift off until around 4am if that. I stumble through the day like I’ve pulled an all nighter, which I have! This move has been a year in the planning and it is all coming down to the wire. I’ve lost a lot of my excitement over it due to the lack of sleep. I tell myself I’ll sleep once I get to France. Martin’s daily emails have helped me understand what CBT-I is and how it can help. I’m now doing the nightly sleep log. Fingers crossed it helps.
Thanks for replying to my first post!

            Susan,

I’m glad to hear you’ve signed up for Martin’s emails as they contain a lot of beneficial information and guidance on restoring your sleep. I consider CBT-I to be similar to starting a new exercise routine – when you first start, you’re really questioning if what you’re doing is having any positive impact but as long as you remain consistent in practicing the techniques, you’ll begin to see benefits from them. Let us know if you have questions about the techniques as you explore the content in Martin’s emails and good luck with your move to France!
