I’ve lately seen an improvement in my sleep not saying I’m sleeping as deeply as I’d like but at least during the times I take a 20 to 30 minute nap its better quality than before so my question is if someone is has been practicing SR and suddenly sees improvement will the sleep gradually become even more deep.

I’m asking this because for months now I have been practicing SR and have been getting the same quality of sleep night after night so I started to begin thinking that its as good as its gonna get, because of that I have been knocking my sleep window down even lower than 6 hours to sometimes 4 by implementing SC thinking I would become more tired giving me a better chance at sleeping but to my surprise that hasn’t been the case after those shorter nights I wake more wired.

The nights I actually stay in bed and maybe sleep not that deeply but still sleep some what
I’ve found there’s actually more sleep drive the next day but its crucial to wake at the same time everyday, could this be because even when we sleep at a lower stage stress hormones are burned off where as if you’re awake most of the night stress hormones increase making
      it very difficult to sleep.

Either way its some good news but the question is will it get even deeper instead simply the brain saying that’s deep enough right now as it is.

        Jess,

I know we’ve exchanged messages on the forum over the weeks so it’s encouraging to hear of your progress. Remember, progress is still progress and it was your dedication that created that achievement!

How do you know you’re not achieving deep sleep – which is typically measured with a polysomnography test? Deep sleep usually occurs towards the start of your sleep cycle with lighter sleep occurring more towards morning/wake up time.

Thank you for replying Scott and yes I am happy about the improvement its encouraging but I’m not there yet.

Oh I’m definitely getting some deep sleep but I’m comparing how I slept before to now which is not as before my insomnia, I used to go to sleep at night immediately fall into a deep sleep and maybe awake once during the night but get back to a deep sleep once again or close to it.

Also I should mention that energy levels aren’t there as they were before my insomnia even though I am sleeping some what, my main question though is if someone is sleeping better but their sleep is still not back to where it was before will the continual practice of SR make it even more deep to the point of restoring the normal restful sleep.

Something interesting you mentioned that I already knew but made me think is how deep sleep occurs during the start of the sleep cycle but for I notice this isn’t the case as it takes at least an hour for me to fall into a semi deep cycle, its during the last few hours that my sleep seems to deepen which is also why I have such a hard time waking and so often stay sitting up in bed so its kinda like the opposite.

It’s good to hear that you are feeling happier with your sleep! Your desire to experience ongoing improvement is completely logical and understandable — at the same time, though, your might be training your brain to believe that nighttime wakefulness is a threat (because you are so keen to avoid it). This, in turn, can keep us tangled in a bit of a struggle with sleep.

Ultimately, sleep happens best when we no longer try to avoid wakefulness and we no longer to try control sleep! If we can eliminate that desire, that’s when true magic can happen!

Thanks Martin for your input so it seems that as far as the process of SR and sleep hygiene are going that I’m doing that correctly but it is true about catastrophizing over not getting the sleep I was getting before the insomnia, maybe just taking a step back and letting the process unfold will bring about the results I’m looking without putting any expectation on it.
