      Hello,

I just found this site. I’ve had insomnia now and then since I was young (like 10). But for the last 3 months it’s gotten RIDICULOUS. Almost non-stop. In the past, it’s gone away after a few days or a week — so going on this long and being this unrelenting, it’s really terrifying. It makes me really feel like I’m never going to have normal sleep (or a normal life) again. I think and worry about it all the time. And feel like a total zombie.

I have gone to a psychiatrist for the first time in my life, experimented with various drugs. Only strong drugs in large doses knock me out, and those make me feel almost as bad during the day. I started a general anti-anxiety med last week (Lexipro) in the hopes that help. Mindfulness meditation, relaxation meditations, body scan meditations — that stuff is all nice but hasn’t made a real difference.

I’m not clear on where it’s coming from. Work and life have their stresses, but it doesn’t on the face of it seem worse than at lots of other points in my past. At this point all of the stress I’m experiencing consciously is about not sleeping and not being able to deal with life because I’m so sleep deprived.

I just found this site and signed up for the email coaching program. Am trying to poke around the world of insomniacs more, so thought I’d put my story up on this forum. Thanks for reading!

      Nick

Welcome to the forum, Nick. Have you discussed CBT-I with your psychiatrist or another medical professional? You sound as though you would be a good candidate since you mention that you tend to worry quite a lot about your sleep (which, in itself, makes sleep more difficult).

Many medications will simply sedate you rather than give you the restorative sleep you are looking for — and as soon as you stop taking them, the insomnia is likely to return. CBT-I is usually a better option since it’s effective over the long-term.

If you are ready to stop struggling with insomnia you can enroll in the online insomnia coaching course right now! If you would prefer ongoing phone or video coaching calls as part of a powerful three month program that will help you reclaim your life from insomnia, consider applying for the Insomnia Mastery program.

          Hi Nick,

it understand sooo well what you’re going through because it sounds exactly like what I have to deal with at the moment.

All of the sudden I struggled with severe insomnia which I feel had taken total control over my life…I’ even afraid to go on overnight-weekend trips because being outside from my bed routine makes everything worse and I feel terrible the whole day after nights in a row without sleeping at all.

I’m also seeing a psychiatrist for the 1st time in my life…she prescribed me several different drugs but looks like nothing is working and I still feel very unwell with having to take something for sleep. So after all I don’t think that the psychiatrist is a solution for me. Went to the doctor to get some blood data because I couldn’t believe that such heavy insomnia could come without any reasons. Curios about the data which I’ll have on Monday.

I know it is terrible terrifying and makes you feel so desperate, but I feel a bit comforted by the though that there are others like me out there. And I strongly hope that we’ll get over it.

Thanks for sharing your story, to me it means a lot.

          Take care,

          Christina
