After the birth of my first son, my nights were filled with so much anxiety that I continued to sleep poorly even once my son started sleeping through the night. I would wake up at 3am every night and stay awake for 2 hours before I could sleep again. When I did fall back to sleep it would be on a couch or futon in another room. I desperately wanted to sleep without interruption.

By keeping sleep diaries, I held myself accountable. I ensured that when I tried to go back to sleep at night after awakening, I would go back to sleep in my own bed. My body truly began to associate my bed with sleep and rest. I also learned to accept that poor nights of sleep will happen. Now when I have a poor night of sleep, it doesn’t spiral into feelings of fear and dread. I went from sleeping 5.5-6 hours a night to 7.5-8 consistently.

Thank you so much for sharing your story, Pallavi!

Your transformation occurred because you committed to implementing techniques that helped you adopt more constructive sleep-related thoughts and behaviors and allowed you to rediscover your own, natural ability to sleep and to sleep well!

Of course, every now and then there might be a difficult night — because these happen to everyone from time to time! The difference now, of course, is that you don’t react to those difficult nights — so your sleep recovers very quickly.

Congratulations and best wishes for the future!
