I wish I could write a useful reply to that. Your insomnia is so much more extreme than mine, apart from the fact if I got to the stage you were at I wouldn't have the mental strength to go out – I'd hide in my flat on my own. So give yourself some credit for still trying to function and not giving up.

I do think you should think about what the doctor said though, and consider checking into hospital for a while.

I wish I had something else useful I could say. xx

OOoh it gets my goat, as does the use of the word “depression”. I have depression – I was diagnosed with it. I was also diagnosed with insomnia as an effect of the depression and medication. People often like to exaggerate or just don't understand the true meaning of what it is like to live without sleep.

    What she said!

Hi Sarah, another Brit with depression here. I do find the anti depressants help with the insomnia but probably coming off them next month 😕

    Welcome to Insomnialand 🙂

Yes, thanks for your hard work Martin. Sorry I haven't been on much the past few days – hopefully that will change again soon 🙂

I went to a TV show recording this evening. It's called TV Burp and it's a humourous review of the week's TV. The guy who presents it is a funny (and very intelligent) comedian called Harry Hill. In an off camera moment he came out with this (not particularly funny but it tickled me!)

Red sky at night – it's night! Red sky in the morning – Damn, I've woken up in the night again!

(perhaps you had to be there…)

    Hi Cyn

I love that your music taste is so varied. And well done for getting a gig in Memphis! I do a bit of amateur acting, I think playing music would be much more scary!

You should move to Japan – they love Buddha bellies there, it's a good luck thing I think!

I work from home by myself so understand all too well the distractions there are! At least people that work away from home have the separation between professional life and home life – more difficult for us!

Do you work in a separate room from the normal living areas of your home? I think it can help. Start forcing yourself to shut down that computer at least an hour before bed. Give yourself some rules, and stick by them. Remember – you're the boss. You need to boss yourself around a bit more!!

I don't have enough rooms to set up a separate room but have tried to set up a working area. Was good at first until I started stressing about how much work I'd taken on!

I'm good at bossing myself around but not good at being nice to myself. Very self critical and at the moment that's in overdrive!

I am a bit of a procrastinator, yes. Easily distracted too and working at home doesn't really help, especially when the place is a mess like it is now!

Ideally my planned routine means stopping work no later than 9pm (it was 2.30am last night), watching TV (a documentary or comedy usually, nothing that will anger or upset me) or reading, having a hot milky drink or chamomile or valerian tea. Then getting my sleeping area prepared (warm pj's, hot water bottle/wheaty bag, glass of water etc) and listening to a meditation before I go to sleep.

At the moment it's stop working and fall into bed.

Yes, if I do follow a routine then I do sleep better. A big part of it is to stop working at least an hour before I go to bed. At the moment I'm not doing that…

I can't sleep at all if I'm sharing a bed, no matter how in love I am. I might get a couple of hours at best. The only way I could live with someone again is either separate beds (or even better) separate rooms! Tim Burton and Helena Bonham Carter have adjacent houses – I think that would be perfect LOL
