A year ago I was in really bad shape. Not only was I struggling with insomnia but I was also suffering from a fear of falling asleep and being hyper aware of that process and having fearful thoughts and anxiety all day, everyday. I truly thought there was nothing or no one that could help me. I am so thankful to Martin for his support and the techniques he patiently shared with me. He was compassionate and answered all of my questions. I had a couple other therapists before Martin and they didn’t help and I even believe they may have unintentionally made things worse. But Martin and the way in which he explains the techniques helped get me out of the worst mental state I’ve ever been in. I highly recommend Martin and I’m very grateful for his help!

September 15, 2023 at 4:52 pm #72653Thank you so much for returning, one year later, to share how you’re doing @Kat87!
If someone reads your post and is thinking to themselves that they’d love to get rid of difficult thoughts and feelings (such as fear and anxiety) but it seems that the more they try to do that, the more they end up struggling, what would you suggest as an alternative approach?
If you were to share one or two changes you made that you feel were particularly helpful in getting you from where you were (struggling with insomnia and struggling with all the thoughts and feelings that come with insomnia) to where you are now, what would they be?

September 16, 2023 at 6:13 am #72695Hi Martin, I’m happy to share my progress 🙂
I understand that well because prior to your coaching I was trying hard to distract myself from the thoughts or somehow work through them and use logic to convince myself they are nonsense. None of that worked and in fact all it did was strengthen them. You showed me a different technique which was to accept them. At first it sounds counter intuitive because you don’t know how you can accept such unacceptable thoughts. But, it is the thing that helped me move past them. It wasn’t instant and I had to train myself everyday to accept the thoughts because my default was to resist them. However, I’d eventually catch myself and go back to your teachings. Another thing that helped a lot was being flexible with the sleeping window. A previous therapist was incredibly strict about it and it made me even more paranoid about being awake. However, you had a more flexible approach which felt more natural and didn’t make me more anxious than I already was. Also, I gradually started to do things even in my tired state which you encouraged me to do even though it was really difficult. Finally, you have a compassionate presence which I found to be very helpful. You answered my questions and it was easy to write to you when I was really struggling and scared which I found I wasn’t comfortable enough to do with the previous therapists. Thank you Martin!

from a flexible and supportive approach.September 21, 2023 at 8:27 am #72845Hi,

October 3, 2023 at 6:38 am #73139How do I get help from martin also? I am in desperate need. The worst insomnia and anxiety because of the insomnia, which then leads to not being able to function all day and depression. I can’t sleep a minute without medication.

November 9, 2023 at 8:20 am #74395Wow this thread is very good and hopeful. I am on day 5 of the free course and I really hope to fix my sleep disorder. I still yet to learn to accept my thoughts. I wish I had found Martin and this forum earlier because I’ve struggled with insomnia on and off for 13 years. I used to sleep every well… Earlier this year I worked with a sleep specialist and learned some of the techniques seen here. I’ve done CBTi and sleep restrictions. While it did help with my sleep problem, it only lasted a couple of months. It was like that over the years as well. I’d sleep better for some times, but when something or even some thoughts happened, it would all come back again and I’d be struggling for months. So I must say I am a bit doubtful because of my past experience. For example, I’ve been doing everything listed on day 5 of the free course already, but it hasn’t helped me consistently. My sleep is all over the place. Is it a luxury to hope for a good uninterrupted sleep for someone with chronic insomnia?
