This is my first time writing a post. I only recently discovered Insomnia Coach and have started listening to the podcasts.

In 2018 I had to have eye surgery and went through a difficult time with insomnia. Now, once again, I am going to be have more eye surgery and find myself in a similar pattern with insomnia.

When I wake up at 2am or 3am (I do my best not to look at the time), and I am not falling back to sleep, I get up. I go to another room, find a place on the couch and read for 20 – 30 minutes. However, even as I’m reading, I can feel the panic/fear running the background. So, rumination seems to always be there.

If there is any guidance that can be offered on how I might better lower my struggle with sleep and the anxiety I feel about the surgery, I would welcome the input.

Since this is my first post, I hope asking this sort of question is okay.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for the great question!

Experiencing panic/fear and noticing your mind ruminating is natural and normal. Your brain is always going to generate all different thoughts and feelings as it does its job of looking out for you.

How do you currently respond to those difficult/distracting thoughts and how is that response working for you?
