So many people here come desperately for help, write long posts, they get a thoughtful, kind and professional reply and don’t even say thank you, let alone respond to the reply that they got. I wonder why. To me that seems selfish and rude. I wonder if there is an explanation.

      Just an observation.

        Hi Edgar

I agree with you. You wrote a call for help about your insomnia and I replied and you then thanked me, which I appreciated.

Maybe people just don’t have any manners now. Or if the reply didn’t resonate with them they don’t bother answering. Like you, I feel people should respond and say thank you regardless.

Definitely. To me it’s basic culture to respond to people who try to help you, or just simply to respond to a message directed at you. If nothing else, to just say thanks.

Maybe people are so used to “like” buttons that, if there aren’t any, they don’t even think of WRITING “thanks” as a possible alternative.

Ah well, what can you do.

It would be nice to see more of those who receive a reply acknowledge the response they receive and perhaps even stick around to share their experience and insights on the posts of others!

I suspect many people who post once and then disappear are still looking for the “secret” or the “quick-fix” — if it’s not immediately forthcoming in a reply they might continue their search elsewhere. Of course, since there typically isn’t a secret or quick-fix, people who are pursuing that approach might be less likely to stick around.

I can try adjusting the notification emails to gently encourage posters to acknowledge any reply they receive. I don’t want to take on the role of “head teacher” or “bossy boots” or be telling people what they should or shouldn’t do, though.

How else might we encourage more participation from those who post questions and receive a response?

I doubt there is a way, people are the way they are, we can’t change people.
I believe you’re right, people look for quick fixes, but not only that, I believe (and hope for them) that they only had one brush with insomnia, got scared, posted, maybe vented a little, then slept OK and didn’t feel the need to come back. Who knows.
