      Hi everyone.
Ive experienced insomnia before but it passed after a few weeks.
This time around its so much worse and doesnt seem to be improving 😪

I eithier dont sleep at all or get a couple of hours a night.
I terrified its going to cause me to have some kind of mental breakdown.
All I do is panic about it all day and night.
Has anyone else had it this severe and been ok.
I have children to look after and I feel like Im failing them.
Im so desperate for help 🙁

Thankyou in advance if anyone replies.

Martin thankyou so much for your reply.
The main thing i want to resolve is the fear around no sleep.
Ive gotten it in my head that the no sleep will cause me to experience some kind of physcotic breakdown, this belief has just fuelled my fear and trapped me in a awful cycle.
If you have any advice on how to get over this fear I would be very grateful.
          many thanks
          Emma

I dunno how to start this so here goes; hey, my name’s Mike, and I’ve been dealing with insomnia for most of my life, and my best honest advice? Don’t anticipate sleep. It’s hard to do, trust me I know, but it’s like when you go to a doctor for a blood draw; the more you think about it, the worse it feels, so when sleep doesn’t come? Get up and do something; work on a hobby, clean up something, take a shower, watch a movie, read, whatever suits your fancy. Sometimes the “distractions” will help you sleep sometimes they won’t, and that’s okay; you’ll either get the rest you absolutely deserve or at the very least know you weren’t staring at the ceiling all night (I find this very comforting, at least it doesn’t feel like “time wasted”).

Also here to tell you that the “psychotic breaks” everyone speaks about when talking of sleep deprivation is, by my estimate, likely very rare; I’ve been “sleeping” like shit for well over a decade (treatment-resistant terminal insomnia + night terror disorder, not a desirable combo) and only ever had 1 psychotic episode after being up for over 60 hours straight. And that is far from the only time I was up for absurdly long.

Some home/natural remedies you could try (if you haven’t already) are chamomile, anise, lavender, and valerian root (it smells really bad but it has helped me at times).

I would advise speaking to a local therapist and/or psychiatrist (if physically/financially possible of course) before reaching for melatonin gummies and pills, those can be a slippery slope even when guided by a professional but especially when on your own. And who knows, maybe they’ll prescribe you something that helps! Different people react differently to each treatment, human bodies are weird like that.

-Best wishes for you and your family, try not to let the big bad wolf we call insomnia break your spirit (if you can raise and care for tiny humans and not die in the process, you can do anything),
              Mike

yes definitely do the 2 week free course. I use to feel like you, like I would have some kind of break down, stroke or heart attack. One time I went 3 days without sleep. I am not afraid of it now. You will sleep eventually. All that panic is what makes us not sleep. I finally got to the point of who cares and go on with life. I set my hours from 12 until 7 and go to bed. If I have a crappy night which rarely happens now I say that sucks but I probably will sleep tonight and I do. We might have a bad night just like we have a bad day sometimes.

It definitely was my response to my sleep problem that kept me all worked up. I listened to a lot of the podcast on here and that really helped. So many of us had the problem. It is so upsetting to think you may not sleep again but you will. Martin Reed told me this and it is so true.

Thankyou all for your kind responses.
I agree that the way im reacting to the sleepless nights is definitely fueling the insomnia.

Ive been watching all the videos on YouTube and it has helped me to feel less alone.
I just feel ive lost trust in my body to sleep.

                  Thankyou all.
