For the past 4 weeks I’ve been experiencing sleep twitches which have prevented my from sleeping properly. I’ve tried finding ways of dealing with this but they are still happening, although they haven’t been as intense as when they first started.

Welcome to the forum Andybear! Sorry to hear about these sleep twitches — it’s little wonder that they have been preventing you from sleeping properly. Any idea what triggered them?

          Hi Martin,

Thanks for responding. I usually get an episode of this once a year, but this time they have last far longer than any other time. I can’t say for sure what triggered them, but I remember that on that day, I had gone to a midday gym session involving heavy weightlifting…I had really pushed myself. Following that, I came home, ate, then later went by a friend and came home at night. It’s that night when it first started.

In the following two weeks I was taking melatonin every night, as it was helping me to fall asleep and stay asleep for a few hours, but the number of hours was getting progressively less. That’s when I went to see my GP and they prescribed Zopliclone, which is what I usually get when I get these twitches, and it helps me to get into a regular sleep pattern and the twitches go away. This time however, that hasn’t happened. After 7 nights the GP told me to stop taking the medication and try to sleep naturally.

Since then, I have been exercising more regularly, trying to calm down a few hours before bed by taking Kalms, chamomile tea, and doing some meditation….but I’m still taking the melatonin for fear of not being able to sleep. I know I should try and sleep naturally now so will do that. I know now that if I do get up say midnight or 1am due to twitches, to get out of bed and read until I feel sleepy again, after this there is some twitching but I manage to fall asleep again.

My main concern is if I need to go back to my GP as it’s been a month now since the twitches first started to happen…or do I just need to be patient and trust that in time, it will get better, or that this is just my new reality?

Just to say that I’ve been sleeping much better now – I think they key has been more exercise and more down-time before bed to relax and clear my thoughts.
