Can anyone tell me if there is a strong link between female hormone fluctuations (estrogen and progesterone), or is this not true? I’ve read in a lot of places where fluctuations, especially in the 40s and 50s, can cause disruptions in sleep, but I rarely hear any CBT-I people talk about it. My doctor has given me a progesterone cream to use for two weeks out of the month, but I’m wondering if it is actually beneficial. I have seen some small improvements in the last week (except had another setback last night), but don’t know if the progesterone is playing any role in that, or the implementation of the techniques.

I’d like to know if the balance of hormones affects sleep too. I’m 43 and when I tell people I have recently started with insomnia a lot say oh it’s probably perimenopause. I just don’t see how hormones would make me unable to sleep suddenly overnight!!

Hormonal fluctuations can definitely influence sleep but that doesn’t mean they lead to a life of chronic insomnia! As the body adapts to hormonal changes, sleep will usually recover. If it doesn’t, that’s usually because of a change in our relationship with our thoughts about sleep and/or a change in our sleep-related behaviors.

I am minded to think my insomnia is more learned behaviour than hormones. I think it would have come on more slowly and intermittently if it was my hormones.
