OK, I know the title sounds a tad ood, but when I explain (or hope to be able to explain) then with a little bit of luck all will be come clear.

I used to work as a security dog handler, and for the most part I used to work nights (I preferred them) and sometimes did shifts that lasted more than 48 hours (one shift lasted a whopping 120 hours, and I didn't sleep through it at all, and trust me, it's not the cleverest thing to even consider attempting). I loved my job, although I was too knackered to actually enjoy the fruits of my labours!

Fast forward 10 years to present day, and you find me having issues where I want to sleep during the day and stay up most of the night…it's almost like the sleep pattern is permanently fixed into my body clock.

Does anyone else have the same kind of issue?

Yes! It's much easier for me to stay up all night and sleep all day — it's always been that way. I sleep better during the day. I find it really hard to wake up in the morning and when I'm awake I'm not much use. Even if I wake up at 6am, I'll still naturally stay up until 3 or 4 am, I just won't sleep. There aren't a lot of jobs for people on this schedule, and I don't think people understand — it's like “morning people” think I'm just lazy, but I can't change it. It's been this way for years.

Good to know I'm not the only one! 🙂

definietly not the only one! i can keep going when i'm awake (but 120 hours! holy crap!), i just have a hard time waking up (physically and mentally) too early.

okay, i haven't been able to post much lately, but my whole sleep/work relationship is really messing me up. i've had to change all of my routines and everything for this new job, and i'm sleeping less than ever. i still don't get anything done in the day, though. i can wake up in the morning alright as long as i do everything the same every morning (and set two alarms!), but going to bed is the hard part. i tried to go to sleep early enough to get 8 hours last night and ended up staying awake three hours just full of ideas.

oh, and when i do sleep, i have incredibly busy, anxious dreams.

i haven't been getting any creative work done in the day, either, because i don't think i think that way when i'm that tired, and it just takes so long to wake up. i don't even know. even now i should be trying to get some sleep! anyway, it's been a month and i've been coping, but i don't know if it's sustainable and i'm afraid i'm just going to crash one day. has anybody else had problems adjusting and/or do you have any advice?
