Hello, I am father of three little kids (4 years old, and twins 17 months old) they are still regularly waking us up every night for few times. I am working in school and when I have some early shifts I have problems to fall a sleep. I had some nights when I didn’t slept at all and then spent a whole day in a classroom feels pretty bad. Low mode, no energy, headache. When I found this site I have instantly slept 3-4 days without problem, but yesterday I slept pretty bad and now I have a challenging day again. I feel like I am improving my knowledge about sleep with this insomnia coach but also in the back I am not fully relieved and free from anxiety about sleep.

Unfortunately we can’t permanently delete anxiety from the brain — and, for as long as we try, we might be setting ourselves up for an ongoing struggle.

From reading your post, it sounds as though you might find it harder to fall asleep when you’re putting pressure on yourself to sleep — when you’re trying to make sleep happen, when you’re trying to avoid wakefulness. And that might be connected to your attempts to (understandably) not experience difficult thoughts and feelings such as anxiety, headaches, fatigue, and low mood.

Unfortunately, all of that is out of your control. So, perhaps it might be helpful to move away from trying to control what cannot be controlled? To acknowledge wakefulness and all the thoughts and feelings that might come with it, to allow it to come and go as it chooses (since you know from experience that you can’t permanently delete it anyway so why add struggle on top), to be kind to yourself in return, and then continue to do things that help to keep you moving toward the kind of life you want to live and the person you want to be (even in the presence of this difficult stuff)?
