I used to sleep at around 11 and wake up around 7. However, due to my working hours now, I have to go to sleep at 1 a.m. I don’t have any problems waking up later in the morning, so I have set my alarm to 8:30. I have shut the drapes and made the room as dark as possible. I have also bought a sleeping blindfold and there is no noise around my home at those hours. I have dinner 3 hours before I go to bed and drink no alcohol or coffee or tea in the evening. Having said all this, my body still insists on waking up at 7. It’s been almost 10 days. I thought that my circadian system needs time to adjust, but it hasn’t changed even a bit. Later in the afternoon, I feel tired and my memory is not optimal now. What can I do? Please help!

i know what you mean – my body is programmed to wake up at 5:30 a.m., even on the weekends. do you want to try going to bed later (maybe around 2-2:30) for a few nights? that might help shift your body clock.

It will likely take some time for your body clock to adjust to your new routine — one thing you can do to help your body clock adapt is to commit to the same sleep schedule every single day, including days when you aren’t working (so, no weekend lie-ins!).

When you go to bed at 1:00 AM, are you feeling sleepy enough for sleep? Do you tend to fall asleep quickly? Are you waking during the night, or do you sleep pretty well right through to around 7:00 AM? Are you taking naps during the day?

Yes, I feel sleepy and It takes 15-20 minutes to go to sleep. I don’t wake up during the night. I sleep until around 7. As for naps, I never take a nap since I know it will mess up bio clock.

Are there any environmental cues that could be waking you at around 7:00 AM? Maybe the neighbors going to work or other environmental sights or sounds?
