This is my first post. I am 44 years old. My on start of insomnia seemed to coincide with what I believe are hot flashes. However when the hot flashes calmed down, I still can’t fall asleep and wake up many times during the night. My mind won’t turn off, I have obsessive thoughts, little irritants become magnified and I obsess on those too. I get one part of a song stuck in my head that just repeats over and over. I’ve tried taking 1 mg clonazepam and that doesn’t even help. I’m so stressed out. I can’t take much more. My health and life are deteriorating. I’ve tried numerous techniques but nothing so far. Just thought I’d get some feedback. Thanks.

I know what you mean about that one piece of the song getting stuck in your head. I hate when that happens. I am sorry you are having insomnia. I do recommend the free sleep course Martin has here on the board. It did help me. I still have insomnia but I am also sleeping better.

Oh I know all too well about songs getting stuck in my head. Before insomnia it was in and out and I would say normal amounts. Now on nights with little sleep, it loops like crazy. It can also be a song I haven’t heard in awhile.

Welcome to the forum, Sleepless in SSB. I’m sorry to hear about your ongoing struggle with sleep. How are you getting on — any improvements yet?

Usually, the best thing to do when you wake during the night and find it hard to go back to sleep is to actually get out of bed until you feel sleepy again. This is known as stimulus control and helps address any “conditioned arousal” or learned association between the bed and wakefulness.

If you are ready to stop struggling with insomnia you can enroll in the online insomnia coaching course right now! If you would prefer ongoing phone or video coaching calls as part of a powerful three month program that will help you reclaim your life from insomnia, consider applying for the Insomnia Mastery program.

Thanks for checking in Martin. No unfortunately if had no success. I do get out of bed when I’m laying there from 30 minutes to an hour. I stay off my mobile device. I’ve tried breathing exercising. I bought a sleep machine. I have a large powerful fan blowing on me. The blanket is off, the blanket is on. I got a cotton pillowcase. I don’t have a lot of money to spend on expensive “sleep cures”. I drink peppermint tea cool.  I tried Benadryl and even clonazepam.  I’ve stopped being anxious over it because it doesn’t help. I’ve basically given up. If anyone has any suggestions I’m always open to them. It’s been almost a month. Thanks.

Great to hear that you’re getting out of bed when unable to sleep! Are you following a sleep window? If so, when do you normally go to bed and when do you get out of bed in the morning to start your day? How many hours of sleep are you getting on a typical night?

Hi I can completely understand what you are going through, I feel I cannot take much more either, my life is deteriorating too I feel. My insomnia started about 3 years ago. I don’t have it every night, I have insomnia when I am doing something in particular the next day, whether its work or seeing the family for example. I never slept a wink last night. I am at a complete loss. I can only describe it, as my mind is going into survival mode and I have to keep awake no matter what, that’s how I feel about it, even though I am going to bed relaxed and not thinking of anything, I just lie there hour after hour. I take OTC tablets, but not had much success.

Hi dival, I know what you mean about having to do something the next day. I think our minds just get hung up on it maybe even subconsciously. That adds more pressure to sleep. OTC’s didn’t work for me either, not even prescription sedatives. My eyes are so tired in the day and they’re blurry but oddly my body isn’t tired. You know how some people can sleep and wake rested? I have never had that feeling in my life. It’s just frustrating to lay in bed awake and I know all of this can’t be good for me physically and mentally. I’ve been making mistakes at work. Have you tried talking to your doctor? Sometimes there could be an underlying something. I don’t know, I’m new to this. Talk to people on here and Martin. Good luck.

                      Hi Sleepless in SSB,

Yes I thought that before about it being subconsciously. I read I few things on here and from today, I have been writing things down. Whether its a good thought or not so good and focusing on the good things and to do the same the next day. I’ve never wrote things down before about it.  I have had in the past prescription drugs, but this caused weight gain. So I am trying Phennergan at the moment, I can get it on prescription, but its cheaper to buy OTC, its still trial and error with this, doesn’t cause weight gain, but I found need to take at least three hours before bed. Yes I get very dry eyes, not good, just so weary today, though my body is feeling ok just. It is very frustrating like you say.  Thank you, Good luck to you too.

Dival, what is Phennergan? Never heard of it. Are you in the US?

Yes sorry I spelt it wrong, its Phenergan. Its Promethazine hydrochloride, there are two strenths, I get the 25mg, I cut them down, I just do it this way to see how I go. I’m in the UK.

Also up to now, only two days writing points of my thoughts and feelings, I feel good about it, I can then concentrate on the good and positives. Instead of dwelling on the not so good.

                              Dival,

Ok I looked it up, Phenergan is kind of like prescription Benadryl, right? A lot of people use Benadryl to sleep but it doesn’t work for me. It’s hard not to dwell on all the negatives. Writing is very therapeutic. I used to write maybe I should start again. I also signed up for Martin’s free sleep course. It helped others.

Sleepless in SSB Yes its like Benadryl. With me, my mind races a lot during the day, so anything that I may think about often, I’ve just started to write down, so once I’ve seen it on paper, I won’t go over it again. Its there, but I won’t dwell on it. Then I do the same the next day, its more like I just jot small points down. I find it therapeutic and because I’m trying to turn negatives into positives, I’m thinking its doing a lot of good. I will look for Martin’s free sleep course. Have you tried 5 HTP . I came across it last year, but didn’t really try it, but started with it yesterday.

                                  What is 5 HTP?
