      Hi group,

First of all thank you all for your contributions to this site. Reading through (some) of these posts has provided me with some ease and relaxation in my time of struggle.

I’ve recently developed a bit of insomnia accompanied by a high level of anxiety when I am ready to go to bed. I recently had a big live event with getting married and this all started right before the wedding. I thought after the wedding was over I would get better but it appears it’s gotten much worse. The jet lag coming back from the honeymoon didn’t help either.

With a little medication (Xanax, advil PM) or a bit of booze, I am able to eventually fall asleep. Oddly enough this makes my anxiety around sleep worse because now I am worried I will be reliant on these to sleep.

I am worried all of this is changing who I am. I use to be a great sleeper. I use to be calm and collected.

Any help is appreciated, thank you for listening.

It’s absolutely normal for sleep to be disrupted when there’s a major change going on in our lives — and a wedding certainly counts as a major change! Sleep will usually recover by itself — but if it doesn’t, that’s usually because of our response to the sleep disruption.

We can easily become quite worried or concerned about our disrupted sleep, and this makes sleep more difficult, which leads to more worry, and more sleep difficulty. Furthermore, we can also do things to try to improve our sleep (such as taking medication or supplements for sleep, using alcohol as a sleep aid, spending more time in bed, etc) that actually make it harder for us to regain sleep confidence and get our sleep back on track.

How are you getting on at the current time? If you are still struggling I would suggest starting off by coming up with a regular (and appropriate) sleep window to help build sleep drive and consolidate your sleep.

        I hope this helps.
