I’ve had a relapse while re-implementing CBT-I. I have been keeping a sleep log detailing when i’m in/out of bed, hours awake/asleep, etc. These last few days, i’ve hit a serious slump sleeping between 0-2 hours of sleep. I look at the clock each time i get in and out of bed for logging. Since i’m getting in and out of bed frequently, i’m looking at the clock a lot. Would it be helpful to stop clock watching? If so, what do you log in your sleep log? And, how do you avoid clocks on ipads and iphones? I like to watch youtube videos and play cards online. Or do i just need to be ok with all the times i’m awake and continue logging times? I know that Daniel from Sleep Coach school recommends avoiding the clock, but how do you log without knowing when you’re awake/asleep?

        Greetings!
Clock watching doesn’t really matter to me anymore. I look at the clock all the time when I’m awake and if it’s still early I just go back to sleep without a problem. I think the ultimate takeaway is being neutral in everything you do and not connecting what you think or do to sleep anymore, I hope that helps.

          Hi
I to am having a relapse and not sure why, last night I didn’t look at the clock but also didn’t get out of bed, just kept waking and dozing.
I think the advice is not to look at the clock but I would say if that is causing you more stress look at least for now.
          Hope you improve soon.

I think i’ve decided to look at the clock and start to be ok with whatever times i am up. Thanks for the advice!

In my experience, the best outcome associated with checking the time during the night is neutral. In my experience working with clients who have chronic insomnia, checking the clock during the night often increases arousal and that can make sleep more difficult.

I think it can be helpful to ask yourself what the benefits are to knowing the time during the night. Sleep cannot be controlled, so there’s nothing we can do with the information — but there is a very real risk that we might start to get frustrated or put pressure on ourselves to sleep after checking the time!
