In the midst of a relapse went to a wedding at the weekend and the mixture of alcohol consumed and a hot hotel room led to a bad night’s sleep. Following night was awful, next to no sleep, followed by a normal night then tonight an all nighter. 3 things are getting to me, I am blaming the wedding for causing the relapse and am now regretting going even though I had a great time, I am panicking about the physical and mental impact ( will I start to hallucinate etc) and I am fearful that I will have to start stopping things I enjoy. My main hobby is running and I am scared it will cause me to give it up.

I am aware that the thoughts are unhelpful and illogical but I can’t stop them going round in a loop, does anyone have any advice?

If you bang on your toes once, will you go about worrying about it all day that then goes on for days and weeks after that?

You also said you had a normal night in the midst. If sleep was completely broken, so how did that normal night come about? Because it would have been continuous bad nights non stop.

Are you mostly a homely person with little or no sun exposure? Have lots of free time as well? I recommend potentially checking your vitamin D levels. I found out I was deficient, but after appropriate supplementation, mood and stress levels stabilized. Sleep improved as a result as well. Good luck.

Your experience seems to tell you that sleep and difficult thoughts and feelings are out of your direct control and that actions that matter and are important to you (such as attending a wedding) are in your direct control.

As you shared, you can stop running or doing other things that really matter to you in an attempt to sleep better — and what kind of life would that be?

If you are ready to stop struggling with insomnia you can enroll in the online insomnia coaching course right now! If you would prefer ongoing phone or video coaching calls as part of a powerful three month program that will help you reclaim your life from insomnia, consider applying for the Insomnia Mastery program.
