I have struggled with insomnia on and off for as long as I can remember, however it has turned into quite the monster after my husband deployed. My husband and I have two young kids (one with special needs) and after he left a lot of the responsibilities have fallen onto my shoulders. I feel like I am always in “go-mode” and come bed time I can’t seem to shut it off. I have talked with my doctor who prescribed me two different types of sleep medication, however after a few weeks their effects seemed to wear off. I am desperate for sleep and feel like the lack of sleep has really impaired my ability to show up for my kids as their mom. I have done all the sleep hygiene tips and tricks and tried just about every natural supplement available all without success. We have months left of this deployment and I often wonder how I will survive this if I can’t get my sleep under control. Thanks for listening.

It sure sounds as though you’ve got a lot on your plate right now, Alcorr — no wonder you are finding it hard to switch off “go-mode”!

It’s understandable that your mind is trying to tell you that you can’t show up for your kids if you don’t get a certain amount or type of sleep, because showing up for your kids is important to you!

The truth of the matter is that you are showing up for you kids, each and every day, independently of the sleep you get — and you can and will continue to do that, because it’s so important to you.

In other words, your mind is simply reminding you of what matters and what’s important. So, there’s no need to fight with your mind — it’s on your side!

It’s no surprise that you haven’t found sleep hygiene useful since all those rituals don’t really tackle the true cause of chronic insomnia — all our attempts to avoid wakefulness and make sleep happen!

Have you tried working through my free insomnia sleep training course? I think you might find it useful!
