I started CBT-I a few weeks ago and it started really well, my sleep was consistently improving but I hit a massive road block. I had a few nights of bad sleep and it went south from there, I think that’s fine but I find myself stuck, there’s something I don’t know how to get through and it’s that an hour before my sleep window starts, I get really, really sleepy, I start to dose off and get micro sleeps of about a minute, it’s pretty hard to stay up, so ironically I become someone with insomnia fighting to be awake for about an hour. I’m afraid I make myself pretty anxious on that process, I was mad sleepy yesterday but by the time my sleep window came around I wasn’t sleepy at all, I stayed up for another 4 hours, it’s crazy I was so sleepy before that! I started getting these panic pangs when I start to fall asleep, I didn’t have those before, I’m not sure I should struggle to stay awake until my sleep window comes around, any help?
Is it okay to got to bed earlier if my wakefulness is hard to maintain?

        Your experience is not unusual!

It makes complete sense that you are measuring progress based on how you sleep each night — and, at the same time, perhaps that might be setting you up for some struggle if your experience tells you that sleep isn’t within your direct control.

Ups and downs and difficult nights and better nights are all part of the journey. What matters is what you are learning and how you respond when you hit these bumps in the road.

Have you talked about your experience and your concerns with your CBT-I therapist?

True, I need bad nights to adress some issues after all. It’s just kind of frustrating because I’m on a string of bad nights, still, I’m looking foward to another night of long wakefulness, I’m looking to befriend that issue since it’s what scares me the most.

And I’m doing this on my own, I don’t count with a therapist that provides CBT-I atm

Nights when sleep doesn’t happen as you might want it to are opportunities to practice what you are learning.

What does befriending wakefulness mean to you, why is it important to you, and how will you know when you’ve achieved that goal?
