Terminal Insomnia

      In my 40s, I started waking earlier and earlier, and now (age 59) I wake up between 3:30 and 4:00 every day, almost no matter when I fall asleep. I’m not stressed or worried at those times; usually I wake up after a vivid dream. But then I can’t fall back asleep. I tend to read a bit and doze, but never really get to sleep. (Sometimes a bit of yoga-ish stretching helps and I can sleep.) A friend says this might have something to do with the adrenal function. Anyone able to help?

        Sleep definitely changes as we get older — you mentioned that you are waking earlier and earlier — when are you usually going to bed at night. Has that changed? If you don’t feel sleepy when you wake and you feel pretty good during the day you might not need more sleep — and that could explain why more sleep isn’t happening.
