I have been on prescription sleep medication for over 1o years, if I don’t take it , I do not sleep. I have tried to get off of it on the weekends, if I cannot fall asleep I go into another room so I  am not tossing or turning. I may fall asleep but not until way into the late night and wake up exhausted.I would like to continue doing this during the week but it is difficult because I am exhausted and  cannot function at work.

I do not like taking the medicine I feel that sleep is a natural function of the body and it is frustrating. Every doctor’s solution was for me to try another pill, I could not find a natural solution. I have not tried  Valerian or Melatonin as I have a thyroid condition and my Dr always told me to be careful with herbal medication. There seems to be no specialty in this area without advise of taking medication.

As you correctly said, sleep is a natural function of the body — and your ability to sleep never goes away. I can’t imagine how tough it must be to be taking sleeping pills for 10 years. Sleeping pills are only ever recommended for short-term use, so I am disappointed to hear that this is the only solution you have been offered by your doctor.

Have you asked your doctor about cognitive behavioral therapy for insomnia? It’s consistently proven as the best treatment option for insomnia — and it’s recommended as the first-line treatment for insomnia by professional organizations such as The National Institutes of Health, The American College of Physicians, The American Academy of Sleep Medicine, and The British Association for Psychopharmacology.

I have not found any CBT therapists in NJ

As you have discovered, there is a real shortage of trained CBT-I practitioners.

Have you considered an online program? Of course, I am biased here because I run my own course that uses CBT-I techniques to improve sleep — but clinical studies have confirmed that online CBT-I is an effective treatment option for insomnia and online courses are often recommended as an alternative to in-person therapy.

With my course, if you implement the techniques you learn and your sleep doesn’t improve by the time you graduate, you get your money back. Something to think about.
