My doctor prescribed Trazodone for me to try, I generally have the kind of insomnia where I wake up in the middle of the night and can't fall back to sleep. Anyway I tried 50mg and it did nothing. Then I went to 75 mg, and I had a night where I had a ton of wild dreams and woke up a million times. My doctor told me I could try 100 mg which I read on a forum somewhere some people use for insomnia. So I tried that, and I actually had trouble falling asleep, and after I finally did I again a ton of strange dreams, and then woke up much earlier than I wanted to and had to get up and read just as it was getting light outside, and then I was drifting in and out; I only could tell I had been asleep part of the time because I remembered some more dreams. So that wasn't very satisfying. It seems that with Trazodone I actually sleep WORSE. Has anyone else heard of this experience? I haven't seen it mentioned as a possible effect.

I have been on Trazodone for about 20 months now. When I originally started taking it, I took 25mg. It has now gone up to 150mg. The first month or so that I took it was filled with, as you say, crazy dreams. I woke up a lot, but the real difference was that I actually fell back asleep (which was at the time a hugely novel experience). Even though I was sleeping, I would feel very tired during the day. It was a different kind of tired though–it didn't feel like sleep deprivation anymore, just like I was constantly sleepy. After a while, my body got used to it, and although I've had to up the dosage several times, it was a real life-saver.

Of course, medication is a fickle, fickle thing, but I definitely had to adjust to Trazodone before it really worked for me. And now, it doesn't really work so much at all.

            Hey,

I started on trazodone about a month ago. The doctor said I had to take it for a month and see if things got better.

They didn't. At first I took one pill of 100mg. Each time I slept for about 14 hours and when I finally did wake up, I was too drowsy to be of any use but sit in the sofa.

So I cut it back to half a pill each night. The drowiness lessened and I did sleep but I had these awfull dreams.

I've always had lively dreams and I always do remember what I dreamt the night before. The first weeks the dreaming became more vivid and crazier then usual.

But lately it's gotten worse. Now I have these awfull nightmares. Last night it was my brother getting killed on a trip in some asian country and I had to arrange the funeral all by myself because the rest of the family were to devastated to do anything.

A couple days ago it was my dad who died, or the house being on fire with my daughter trapped inside.

I don't know what to do. I stopped taking them for a few nights and the insomnia came right back.

So what do I choose: nightmares or insomnia?

I guess another visit to the doctor is called for.

That's interesting. Has anyone else experienced nightmares when taking trazodone? Is it listed as a known side-effect?

I had a friend who took it and had awful dreams. She also had ambien, just in case, and one night she took one of them and forgot she had while on the meds, so she took the other one too and she got really sick and was throwing up and everything.

I have tried Trazadone as well and found that I had awful dreams and woke up feeling like I had run a marathon. Trazadone also gave me migraines. Out of all the drugs I have tried that one is my least favorite. Hopefully it will get better for you!

I seems to be getting better. The nightmares are gone. The dreams I have are real vivid though, but I don't mind that. Sometimes they are actually great fun.

I just went to a sleep doctor or something today, and she said that the vivid dream thing might be related to narcolepsy. Has anyone else ever been told this? I think she was just trying to find a way to justify a sleep study to my insurance company.

                        Hi,

I had been off narcotic sleep medications for almost 2 years, and when lunesta stopped working alltogether, I was switched to trazedone. For a few weeks it worked, knocked me out right away, but what a hangover in the morning! Now, it does nothing. Nothing at all at any dose. I see the doctor tomorrow and I am afraid that I will need clonipin (sp?) again. I have to get over the whole NARCOTIC thing because I am going crazy.

I was started on 300mg of Trazodone hydrochloride last summer which initially did nothing but I was told to continue the course as it would take up to 6 weeks to take affect. I think it did make my sleep worse for a while but I was in such a mess from not sleeping & depression that I couldn't tell what was & what wasn't making it worse.

A few months after taking them I stopped taking Zopiclone 7.5mg because these had started working as a sedative & they were calming me down physically, I asked to be put onto a lower dose so I was put down to 225mg.

Trazodone is known to give nightmares, suicidal & negative thoughts in some cases, but if you're getting those side affects you need to tell your doctor. Apparently these symptoms are worse if you have post traumatic stress syndrome.

It's mainly an anti-depressant with some sedative affects, it increases your serotonin levels but not everyone who can't sleep needs their serotonin levels increased. Have you tried Zopiclone?
