I wait until I am sleepy to go to sleep, and that works great. My problem is that I wake up every 1-2 hours. I do not know why I wake up so often in the middle of the night. Typical pattern: 9:00 go to sleep, 10:30 to 11:00 wake up. Then repeat every 2 hours or so. One of the times I wake up I usually take a PM medication which may make the cycle go longer.

Waking during the night is a normal part of sleep.

(Although it can also be a symptom of other issues such as sleep apnea, that will usually comes with additional symptoms such as daytime sleepiness, pauses in breathing, very loud snoring, and/or waking with a headache and/or a dry mouth or sore throat.)

Other than taking a PM medication when you wake, how else are you responding to those awakenings and what are you learning from how you are responding?

I understand that waking up in the middle of the night is a normal part of sleep, but every 2 hours? That cannot be normal. I listened to you on a podcast so I do try to follow some of your ideas to get back to sleep. I sit up and read. I sometimes I get out of bed and read. Reading makes me “sleepy.” What makes me fall a sleep is listening to an audiobook. I tried to go without my phone at all, but it is the boring audiobook which makes me go to back to sleep.

I used to wake up at 1:00 or 3:00 after going to bed at 9:00, which I know is normal. I am 62 years old. Now I wake up way more often. One other thing is I have MS. That may be contributing to me waking up.

Nighttime awakenings are often most likely to happen as we emerge from each sleep cycle — and a sleep cycle tends to average somewhere around 1.5-2 hours or so (it’s not an exact science). Have you discussed your concern about waking every two hours at night with your doctor?

You are clearly a problem-solver and an action taker, mbeebe! How are you finding that new response of reading or listening to an audiobook when you wake during the night? How does it compare to what you might have been doing before?
