What normally wakes me up early, like 3-4 am, is having to get up to go pee. Sometimes I get another hour of sleep after that but then wake up again. Usually after that I can’t get back to sleep. Sometimes the waking early, and staying awake is my arousal system kicking in. Thinking about things and often worrying. So I’m curious about what people do for activities. Reading at least calms my arousal system but usually doesn’t get me back to sleep. I have experience with meditation and could do a guided meditation but I’m reluctant to use my cell phone to start this because of the light. Would it be ok to use my phone just for long enough to start my meditation while having it set for night mode and low light? Does anyone do anything different like listen to music, or an audiobook if they feel just too tired to sleep?

I have the same problem, waking up several times, and yes early. I would not suggest any blue light or phone, that will kick in your arousal!!!

You could try doing nothing. You could lie in bed, expect that you might not sleep and that resting is sufficient for now. Quit trying so hard to sleep. Even normal sleepers wake up and don’t fall back asleep so you aren’t alone here, because all that is normal. Stop being so hard on yourself. It isn’t the sleeplessness that tires people out, it’s the struggle to control something that’s really beyond you. So whenever I get episodes like these, I just tell myself that the reason I can’t sleep is because my body doesn’t need to sleep for that moment. I trust my body enough that it knows what it’s doing and that it will sleep when it needs to, in due course.
