ScottMentorAmardanan,
Welcome to the forum! Can you expand on your thought of being able to see your nightmares? Are you awakened by your nightmares? If so, are you able to return to sleep? How often do you experience these nightmares weekly, monthly?

ScottMentorLizzy,
Excellent suggestions, especially how to better manage your thoughts since anxious thoughts towards our sleep issues is a dominant characteristic of someone experiencing insomnia.

ScottMentorHey @Vakerue!
Congratulations on exploring the CBT-I techniques, it sounds like you’ve experienced some improvements in your sleep in the last several weeks! It’s not uncommon for most people to want instant gratification in activities or behavioral changes they begin – diet/weight loss, exercise program, etc but, patience and commitment to the CBT-I methods are keys to your success. Don’t be so hard on yourself over an occasional restless night, this is a long term strategy. Setbacks can be very discouraging but you’ve got the tools and information to quickly correct the path.
Have you tried listening to podcasts or to a TV channel that’s not too stimulating (e.g., nature show, etc)?

ScottMentorHi!
Welcome to the forum, thanks for posting!
What is the biggest challenge you face with sleep – falling asleep when you go to bed, staying asleep or waking up too early and not having the ability to fall back to sleep? What is an average night of sleep like for you?

ScottMentorHey Emma!
Welcome and sorry to hear about your sleep struggles.
Can you provide some greater insight into your current sleep pattern – what time do you go to bed and what time do you get out of bed to start your day? Describe what you mean by those nights of decent sleep are always “broken”?
I’d encourage you to view Martin’s video on bedtime jerks as he explains in detail why they occur and how to address them – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFlxiXbYQag&t=184s
Hope this helps!

ScottMentorIt’s not surprising that you’ve experienced nights where the sleep medication doesn’t work since no medication can generate sleep. Medication doesn’t address the root cause of our disrupted sleep – our thoughts and behaviors toward our sleep! If we take a pill and we aren’t able to sleep that night, we start to think something is wrong with our natural ability to sleep. We begin to have anxious thoughts about our sleep but, in reality, we don’t lose our ability to sleep just like we don’t forget how to breathe. If you’re extremely nervous about quitting the medication, you might consider discussing it with your primary care physician.

ScottMentorHi!
Welcome to the forum!
What time do you usually go to bed at night, when do you get out of bed to start your day in the morning, and how many hours of sleep would you say you get on an average night? Are you experiencing any anxious thoughts at bedtime or feeling relaxed? If you aren’t able to fall asleep when you go to bed, do you continue to lie in bed or get out of bed and engage in something more enjoyable?

ScottMentorHi! Welcome to the forum!
I don’t think it’s uncommon for everyone to experience an occasional night of disrupted sleep every few months and, as you mentioned, it seems like you’re able to go about your day normally. Why do these few occurrences every 2-3 months worry you?

ScottMentorHi Daisy!
Sorry to hear about your experience but I’m encouraged to see you on this forum asking for ideas on overcoming insomnia. Can you describe what your sleep is like at the current time — what is an average night like? Are you currently experimenting with CBT-I techniques? If so, are you having any difficulties understanding or implementing these methods?

ScottMentorHi Laura!
Thanks for posting that information and tip! People with insomnia certainly monitor for sleep more closely than those not experiencing it so hiding your clock and smartphone at night is a positive step. I hope you continue to have sleep success!

ScottMentorHi @Jojo!
Congratulations on experimenting with the CBT-I techniques that tackle the thoughts and behaviors that perpetuate sleep disruption. Just because you have a tough night of sleep, don’t beat yourself up. You’re taking a huge step forward toward helping yourself by implementing these techniques. If you remain committed to the techniques, you’ll begin to see consistent results from them. People want instant gratification in everything – weight loss, exercise, etc., but patience and commitment to the CBT-I techniques are keys to your success. Do you think you’re putting too much pressure on yourself to sleep after achieving 4 nights of quality sleep?

ScottMentorHi @Xavier!
Welcome to the forum! By saying, “this new method”, are you referring to CBT-I techniques, specifically the stimulus control method, or something else? If you don’t fall asleep right away, what is going through your mind? Are you relaxed or feeling anxious when you’re lying in bed? Do you feel like you’re monitoring for sleepiness to closely when you get out of bed to read instead of being fully engaged in the activity?

ScottMentorHey @Cath!
I think your forum post describes what many on this forum have experienced, including myself. As you mentioned, it doesn’t matter if anxiety or insomnia came first, you create a vicious cycle that both feed off each other and perpetuate your sleep issue. Worrying about sleep usually makes sleep more difficult which leads to even more worry! When we allow sleep disruption to affect our daytime functioning, the more attention you’re putting on your sleep concern. We’re tempted to cancel our social events, stop our exercise program and so on but when you begin changing your life because of insomnia, you’re putting a spotlight on the problem.
Keep in mind, as difficult as it may seem right now, we don’t lose our ability to sleep just like we don’t forget how to breathe. When you start to worry about sleep, what is going through your mind?
