★ AdminThank you for sharing — as you’ve noticed, many people only post questions and concerns in the forum so I appreciate you sharing your progress and the specific approaches that have helped you up to this point!
I’ve no doubt your post will be reassuring, encouraging, motivating, and supportive for a lot of people (and I encourage anyone else reading this to also post any “wins” or insights — no matter how small — and to share any words of encouragement or motivation, too)!
It sounds as though the sleep window has freed up some additional time for you to do things that matter and that you have well and truly begun your journey moving away from trying to control sleep and all the difficult thoughts and feelings that can come with (and after) periods of nighttime wakefulness.
Thank you, too, for sharing that you’re feeling more comfortable with being awake in bed at night (no need to get out of bed just because you’re awake!) and that you are continuing to give yourself the opportunity to do “good stuff” each day, even after difficult nights.
I think it makes sense that you feel a bit different each day, because each day is different! Sleep, thoughts, and feelings are rarely the same day after day and night after night 🙂
It sounds as though the changes you’ve been experimenting with up to this point have generated many helpful insights! Thanks again for sharing them.

★ AdminWaking is a normal part of sleep and can often go unnoticed. Of course, if sleep is a concern we are more likely to notice these awakenings and, if we start trying to fight or avoid them it can be a lot more difficult to fall back to sleep!
How do you currently respond to those awakenings?

★ AdminI don’t think we can make ourselves “easy” with bad nights — they can be really difficult and we aren’t trying to trick ourselves into believing otherwise!
What we might want to do is ensure that we are responding to this difficult stuff in a workable way.
When you experience tension, how are you currently responding to it, and how workable is that approach proving to be?

★ AdminThank you for sharing — and it makes sense that you’re tired of it!
Since you cannot control sleep or get rid of wakefulness, what do you feel would be a workable way of responding to what you’re experiencing?

★ AdminThat anxiety is real and it can be really difficult, too. How do you currently respond to the anxiety, and how workable is that approach proving to be?

★ AdminThank you so much for sharing! It sounds as though you’ve moved away from trying to control your sleep and freed up the energy that might have been consumed by that ongoing struggle to do things that matter to you and that help you live a rich and meaningful life.
In other words (and as you described), you are working yourself free from the insomnia trap and are living your life independently of sleep!
Great stuff!!!

★ AdminIt sounds as though your experience is telling you that trying to fight or avoid thoughts and feelings might help temporarily, but it’s not a long-term solution. No matter how hard you try, your experience seems to say that you cannot control your thoughts and feelings.
We can certainly reduce the likelihood of things like pain — we don’t run around the house with sharp knives and we don’t play with fire, for example! But we cannot get rid of all pain. One day we might trip and fall over. One day we might pull a muscle.
So, we have a choice to make — we can withdraw from all activities, move away from the life we want to live, and move into a padded cell in an attempt to eliminate all possibility of experiencing pain. Not much of a life, right? And even then, we might still end up getting a muscle cramp and experiencing pain anyway!
Or, we can do things that might help prevent pain from showing up (we can start walking when carrying knives and stop paying with fire) and then live the life we want to live by doing things that matter to us while also acknowledging that with a rich and meaningful life comes pain from time to time. At least then, that pain is serving some kind of purpose, right?

★ AdminThere’s that great mind of yours, looking out for you again! It’s providing you with lots of information — some helpful, some not helpful, some accurate, some inaccurate, some useful, some not so useful. Fortunately, you get to decide how you respond to that information — regardless of what your mind says!
It sounds as though doing nothing each day isn’t helping you live the life you want to live and isn’t making things any better. Perhaps there’s an opportunity to change your approach there?

★ AdminThat fear comes from your brain doing its job and looking out for you! Perhaps that fear might also be reminding you of what’s important to you — it might come with some helpful information, too.
For as long as you are a human being, you will experience the full range of human thoughts, feelings, and emotions. You can’t control those thoughts, feelings, and emotions (no matter how hard you try, they’ll always come back if they choose to do so) — but you always get to choose how you respond to them!
It sounds as though you are already taking steps to implement behaviors that might help create better conditions for sleep and move you away from the insomnia struggle!

★ AdminI am not sure we ever learn how to sleep — it can’t really be taught since it’s something we cannot directly control. So, perhaps it might be helpful to thank your mind for looking out for you when it generates thoughts like that (thanks, brain!) and then refocus your attention on where you are and what you are doing instead of trying to fight or avoid such thoughts.
I wonder if your mother has a helpful insight there, too — regardless of how she sleeps, the focus of her attention is elsewhere. And so, she just doesn’t consider sleep to be a problem. It’s not something that’s getting in the way of her living the life she wants to live. She is living her life, independently of sleep.

★ AdminWelcome to the course!
The days can be a lot more difficult after difficult nights — no doubt about it! How do you currently respond when you have a day where it feels as though you have absolutely no energy? Can you think of any ways you might be able to help reduce that suffering (even if only a little bit), when it feels as though you have no energy?
It sounds as though you’ve trodden that well-worn path of trying to make sleep happen — and, even though your experience tells you that you cannot make sleep happen, your mind insists that you keep on trying (maybe it also tells you to keep doing things that don’t work, but to try even harder)! This is how many of us end up feeling stuck.
So, there’s nothing mysterious going on. Your experience is difficult and it is not unique or unusual. Hopefully this course will help you explore a new approach that might help you get “unstuck” so you can better live the life you want to live, independently of sleep!
You are not alone!

★ AdminOur thoughts can be true. We aren’t looking to dispute them or change them — it’s just that it can be helpful to move away from getting tangled up in a big struggle with them, especially when they are related to things we cannot directly control.
The answer to your question might be similar to the answer to any of these questions:
* How can I accept the idea that, as a human being, sometimes I will feel unwell?
* How can I accept the idea that I cannot make myself win the lottery?
* How can I accept the idea that [beautiful Hollywood star] will not fall in love with me and want to marry me?How would you answer any of those questions, and how might they relate to your question? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

★ AdminWelcome aboard!
The mind is a funny old thing, isn’t it? When we find it hard to fall asleep, the brain tells us that we cannot fall asleep — and that sounds so much scarier compared to telling us something like we are finding it hard to fall asleep. I think this might be one of the brain’s strategies to grab our attention as it does its job of looking out for us!
What’s your plan with the sleeping pills, moving forward?
