★ AdminHello chay and welcome to the forum. It sure sounds as though you’ve made a lot of progress, acting in ways that are more aligned with the person you want to be and the life you want to live.
Since you mentioned that so much of your focus is currently on sleep, how might you shift that focus, do you think? How might you open your attention up to more of what’s around you and doing more of the things that matter to you?

★ AdminIt’s hard, isn’t it? And it’s not unique or unusual. You are not alone!
How do you respond to the anxiety you described and how effective/helpful is that approach?

★ AdminYikes, I feel exhausted and fatigued on many days — and I sleep well 🙂
When you had no concern about sleep, were you tracking your sleep so closely? If not, why start now? If you find that trying to track your sleep is making things more difficult then you might want to move away from doing so. Many people find that it isn’t helpful — you aren’t alone there!
Are you currently following any kind of sleep window? How are you getting on with it?

★ AdminIf you are finding it hard to fall asleep then you might be going to bed before you are sleepy enough for sleep, might be putting pressure on yourself to sleep, might be trying to avoid wakefulness, and/or might be trying to fight or get rid of the thoughts and feelings that might choose to show up at that time.
If insomnia has only just showed up, it’s likely that it will go away all by itself. I think a good way to respond to short-term insomnia is to go to bed when you feel sleepy enough for sleep and to get out of bed in the morning at a reasonably consistent time.
You might want to see if you can avoid making any changes in an attempt to make sleep happen or to chase after sleep since it’s all the effort we put into sleep that provides insomnia with the oxygen it needs to survive.

★ AdminHave you tried acknowledging the anxiety as a natural and normal human feeling and emotion that’s reminding you of things that are important to you?

★ AdminThanks for sharing so many insights in your post, kho:
“Concerning the nights when I can’t sleep at all, I think those are the nights I put most pressure on my self to sleep…”
How might you move away from putting pressure on yourself to sleep, do you think?
“Even if I’m trying to convince myself that it doesn’t matter if I sleep or not, my brain doesn’t really believe it because what I often feel when I can’t sleep or if I wake up during the night is disappointment and sadness of not being able to sleep.”
That makes sense since we can’t control our minds — and your brain will always generate thoughts and feelings about things of concern (or potential concern). Instead of trying to control your thoughts and feelings, perhaps acknowledging and making space for them to come and go as they please might help you practice moving away from struggling with them?
You will always care about sleep and how you feel — trying not to only sets you up for struggle! I wonder what effect it might have to do things (no matter how small) that help you live a life that’s aligned with your values and that keep you moving toward the life you want to live even after difficult nights and even when difficult thoughts and feelings might be present?
“What is improvement? What to look for in early stages?”
Since insomnia is, ultimately, a struggle problem, perhaps practicing actions that help you move away from struggle might be a good goal to have? Actions you can control — outcomes you cannot 🙂

★ AdminI couldn’t agree more — so much of our struggle as human beings comes from trying to control what we think and how we feel, and not being kind to ourselves when things are difficult.
Thanks for sharing!

★ AdminAnxiety, worry, and fear are all symptoms of your brain doing its job and looking out for you! Thank goodness for that — we wouldn’t be alive today if it wasn’t for those types of emotions and feelings!
What is it about the arrival of those thoughts and feelings that makes things difficult, do you think, and how do you currently respond to them (and how workable/effective is that proving to be)?

If you browse the Insomnia Coach podcast you will find people from all different backgrounds 🙂
I hope this helps!

★ AdminWelcome to the forum! We never forget how to sleep — just as we never forget how to breathe! What makes sleep more difficult is all the effort we can exert in an attempt to make it happen!
Have you ever tried to really control your breathing or how you walk? Have you noticed how it all seems to suddenly become a lot more difficult, the more involved you get in the process? Sleep is just like that — the more you try to control it, the more difficult it feels.

★ AdminThe online course is the same, regardless of whether you choose the self-coaching or the 1-on-1 coaching option.
The only difference is that with the 1-on-1 coaching option, you also get unlimited email access to me for eight weeks, starting from when you enroll. So if you have any questions or want to explore specific challenges in more detail, you can email me and I will be there to coach and support you.
With the self-coaching option, there is no 1-on-1 coaching, but you do have access to a private client only forum for questions and support.
The online course was completed redeveloped for 2023 and since it runs for six weeks the first batch of graduates are only starting to trickle through now (there was a limited beta launch in November 2022). As people continue to work through the course I will post reviews and testimonials on the Insomnia Coach reviews page.
Separately, I also offer a phone coaching package that involves an initial one-hour call (voice only or video), two weeks of email access to me, and a 30-minute follow-up call at the end of the two weeks.
I hope this helps!

★ AdminSounds like it might be worth an experiment! Sleep drive isn’t usually the main problem for people with chronic insomnia — it’s all the effort that goes into trying to make sleep happen and/or trying to fight or avoid the difficult thoughts and feelings that might choose to show up.
With that in mind, being in bed when awake isn’t really the problem — but being in bed and engaging in a battle with sleep and the mind can be!
If you choose to watch some Netflix because that’s something you enjoy, you might want to give that a try, too — as long as your goal isn’t to make sleep happen, because with a goal you can’t control you might end up setting yourself up for struggle!
