Welcome to the forum, Mags. First, let me tell you that there is hope for you and you are still capable of natural sleep. I have worked with people who lived with insomnia for over 30 years and managed to improve their sleep (without pills) within a few months.

As you mentioned, many people who struggle with sleep have high levels of anxiety surrounding sleep. This is completely normal and happens because we become conditioned that the bed is a place of stress and wakefulness rather than relaxation and sleep. As we become more worried about sleep, sleep becomes worse, and this leads to more worries about sleep.

The majority of people who have overcome their insomnia will have used cognitive and behavioral techniques to improve their sleep. These techniques work by addressing the root cause of most cases of insomnia — typically, incorrect and/or inappropriate thoughts and behaviors related to sleep. When these thoughts and behaviors are addressed, anxiety and worry about sleep begins to fall, and this leads to sleep improving. As sleep improves, worry falls further and sleep continues to improve (the exact opposite of the negative cycle associated with insomnia). Have you looked into CBT-I by any chance?

Waking during the night is not, by itself, unusual. When you wake during the night, what do you think is stopping you from falling back to sleep?

Shift work can be hard on sleep. How often do you work these double shifts? When your shift on Saturday is over, when will you be back to work and what will your schedule be then?

When you wake during the night, do you feel as though it’s the leg sensations associated with RLS that are making it hard for you to fall back to sleep? Did you ever have an overnight sleep study to see if you were moving your legs while asleep at night?

    Hi Dave

Sleep restriction is still relevant even if you are getting less than 5 hours of sleep. If you are getting less than 5 hours of sleep each night, I suggest scheduling 5.5 hours for sleep each night.

You mentioned that you don’t fall asleep until 5.30-6am in the morning — do you feel sleepy before that time?

Do you have a link to the article you can share? I know that science is beginning to explore the role of gut health when it comes to our overall health — and that includes sleep. A healthy diet is a great way to set yourself up for good sleep — but we can’t yet say with clinical certainty what type of diet is best for sleep.

You don’t need to feel alone any longer — if you browse the forum here you will see that there are plenty of people in a similar situation. We know how tough it is.

The good news is that improving your sleep is possible. I have worked with clients who had trouble sleeping for decades. After 2 months, their sleep improved significantly.

Tell us more about your sleep. What is a typical night like? Why do you think you struggle with sleep?

It sounds as though you would be a good candidate for CBT-I. Remember that relaxation is actually a skill — and therefore, relaxation needs to be practiced regularly in order for it to be effective!

What makes you unhappy about your sleep? 6.5 hours is within the normal range. I am assuming you have all these details about sleep stages from a consumer sleep tracker. Just be aware that consumer sleep trackers are unable to adequately determine sleep stages with a clinically-accepted degree of accuracy. They are only using guesswork. It’s better to judge your sleep quality based on how you feel the next day (whether you feel refreshed or fatigued).

Welcome to the forum. Unfortunately, the fact of the matter is, we cannot control our sleep. We cannot simply tell ourselves to fall asleep and there is no secret ‘sleep switch’ we can flick to put us to sleep. As soon as we try to sleep, we make it harder to sleep. That’s because the simple act of trying activates the mind, and the brain will keep checking to see if we have met our goal of falling asleep. By giving our mind this task, we are making it almost impossible to sleep!

With that being said, we can take steps to increase the likelihood of sleep. Techniques such as not spending too much time in bed, and getting out of bed when you can’t sleep will help — but they take a lot of practice (and commitment).

If you want to get off the sleeping pills, you may want to look into CBT-I.

I am a little confused by the concerns you have about your sleep. If you are only awake for less than 5 minutes during the night, why are you worried about your sleep?
