I am the same way. I work full time and go full speed and still no sleep. For months now since I quit sleeping pills. Don't know what is wrong with me. Brain is unable to sleep. Behavoiral therapy hasn't helped. So ready to get back on drugs.im going to try. If not, I hate to think what will happen. Getting desperate and don't know how y'all do this for years.

What type of behavioral therapy did you try? It's uncommon for that kind of therapy not to help when it comes to insomnia – unless other medical conditions are responsible for sleep issues.

Sleep is a natural process that only really becomes a problem when we try to intervene or 'force' it. Simply accepting that we have no real control over sleep can really help reduce fear and anxiety about sleep.

Anxiety about sleep is pretty common. I'd even suggest that it's one of the biggest causes of insomnia. If anxiety is keeping you awake, two things can really help:

    1) Distracting the mind

    2) Changing the way you think about sleep

You can distract the mind by trying guided relaxation meditation, or listening to relaxing audio (brainwave entrainment sessions can be particularly helpful).

Cognitive behavioral therapy can help you change the way you think about sleep, and fix things you are doing that harm sleep without you even realizing it.

I know that eye health has a strong link to sleep health; but it's normally more to do with the amount (and type) of light we subject our eyes to. I've not heard of a link between sleep issues and dry eye or red eye. With that being said, if you're in pain then it's perhaps unsurprising that you find sleep difficult.

Welcome, Karen. I try to avoid telling people how much sleep they should be getting, since we're all different – and sleep quality often counts for more than sleep quality. That being said, all we *really need* is about 5.5 hours of 'core sleep' each night.

My apologies for the delay in replying to this; your post completely fell off my radar.

This is a quite specific action and symptom – do you think the chronic dry eye is directly related to the benadryl? Do you feel the benadryl helps you sleep? How often are you taking it?

I don't think that post debunks sleep restriction – if it comes across that way I think I need to make some edits!

Sleep restriction is often misunderstood. It's not about restricting the amount of time you spend asleep, it's about restricting the amount of time you spend in bed, not sleeping!

For example, if you average six hours of sleep each night but spend ten hours in bed then you should restrict the amount of time you spend in bed so it's closer to the amount of time you spend sleeping. Sticking with the six hours of sleep example, someone like this shouldn't be in bed for more than seven hours each night.

This 'time allotted for sleep restriction' will help associate the bed with sleeping, reduce sleep anxiety and strengthen the sleep system.

Anxiety is a huge sleep disruptor, and it creates a vicious cycle, too.

What treatment options have you explored for your sleep issues?
