Yikes – you've certainly been through the wars with your sleep history. I hope you'll share your wealth of experience in the forums by contributing to discussions and questions that relate to all the remedies and treatments you've tried.

About the only obvious thing I didn't spot in your list was CBT (cognitive behavioral therapy). Have you looked into this, or given it a try?

At the very least, please know that you aren't alone – we're here to support one another and we know what you're going through.

    Welcome, fellow Oregonian!

What made you consider resetting your body clock as a way to improve your sleep? Do you fall asleep OK, but find that you wake during the night?

Melatonin can sometimes be helpful when it comes to altering your circadian rhythm.

Welcome to Insomnia Land, Dani. Don't worry – nobody here will recommend warm milk as an insomnia cure!!

I think you're right to be concerned about the latest studies regarding the health consequences/implications of sleeping pills – but, as you say, they are still a tool many of us need in order to tolerate our sleeplessness.

Have you tried any non-pharmaceutical treatments for your sleeplessness?

I hope as you lurk around the forums you'll also take the time to contribute if you have an experience to add, or a question that needs answering. Members find that the more they contribute to the community, the more they get from the community.

Once again, welcome – and I look forward to getting to know you.

Sounds fascinating. Like stillawake, I'd love to know more about your motivations for making the documentary. Of course, it'd be great if Insomnia Land got a mention, too 😉

Thanks for sharing – did you make any other lifestyle changes apart from the (I assume you're referring to) 5-HTP regimen?

For those not 'in the know', 5-HTP (also known as oxytriptan) is a nutrient found in certain foods. 5-HTP is a precursor to serotonin, a neurotransmitter that’s important in a healthy sleep cycle, as well as for a balanced mood and feelings of well-being.

This nutrient can be found alongside other sleep enhancing ingredients such as passion flower, valerian and melatonin in branded supplements such as SerenitePlus.

You definitely aren't alone – sleeplessness drives people crazy and deep down I think this is what the zombie apocalypse is all about; it's not the undead that need to be feared… it's the insomniacs.

I think dreams are a rare commodity around here so I am not sure if anyone will be able to come forward with an analysis for you, but you never know – perhaps I'll include this post in the next Insomniac Bulletin.

Sorry to hear of your exhaustion, but hey – if it's allowing you to get some sleep, at least there's a silver lining.

    Hi Jim

Welcome to Insomnia Land. You sound as though you've had a tough time of it lately. At the very least, now you've found our community you know that you aren't suffering alone. There are others out there that know what you're going through.

I am interested in hearing more about your CBT – you mention that you're finding it difficult due to the strict sleep/wake times. Do you mean it's difficult as it's interfering with your family life/routine?

Have you managed to figure out what suddenly triggered your sleeplessness? From your description, it sounds as though it hit very suddenly.

You'll find plenty of advice and support in the forums; but you'll only get out of the community as much as you put into it. I look forward to reading more of your posts and getting to know you better.

    Hey Caz!

Sorry I missed your post!! It's great to see you back, even though it took me a while to notice!!

I have heard that it's wise to avoid refined grains and sugars – particularly in the evening.

Apparently, eating these foods will cause a ‘hormone rollercoaster’ which may disrupt sleep cycles. This makes sense, particularly as we’ve written before about the link between blood sugar levels and insomnia.

It's important to note that you shouldn't try replacing sugar with artificial sweeteners since they've been linked with a number of insomnia cases: http://www.insomnialand.com/blog/is-there-a-link-between-artificial-sweeteners-and-insomnia/
