    Dom007,

    Welcome and thanks for posting!

Worrying about our sleep can cause sleep disruption which oftentimes leads to even more arousal – leading to a vicious loop. Can you describe what an average night of sleep is like at the moment? When you wake after 2-3 hours of sleep, do you remain in bed calm or anxious?

    Hey Jess!

I encourage you to find activities during the day that make the day enjoyable and try to go about your day as if you aren’t experiencing any sleep disruption. Have you considered exploring a sleep window that could be beneficial in building your sleep drive?

We don’t have control over how and when our body moves from one sleep phase to the next. Why do you believe you’re only achieving light sleep? To my knowledge, the only method of measuring our sleep phases is by being monitored during a polysomnographic study.

    Hey Brad!

Welcome to the forum! When you begin to have anxious thoughts towards your sleep, what’s going through your mind? Have you thought about managing your negative thoughts differently? Instead of becoming anxious or frustrated when the thought of sleep arrives, what if you changed that relationship by responding with, “so what” – “So what if I can’t fall asleep right now, I will eventually”? Since we can’t determine when thoughts arrive or the context of the thought, do you think changing our response to them might be beneficial for you?

    Hi Andy!

Great question! Instead of me trying to formulate a response, I think Martin explains it very well in his video – https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KFlxiXbYQag

Have you tried any of his suggestions in the video?

    Hi Cinderella!

    Welcome to the forum!

It’s encouraging to read that the nights you experience some sleep disruption, you don’t allow it to affect the following day! If you don’t fall asleep when you go to bed, it usually means that you aren’t sleepy enough for sleep to happen. What time do you go to bed at night and do you experience any sleep related anxiety or frustration when you’re lying in bed not able to sleep? If you do, what’s your next step (continue to lie there, get out of bed, read in bed, etc)?

    Hey Grangers!

Welcome to the forum and thanks for posting! Time in bed considers the amount of time you’re asleep plsu the time you’re awake.

    Hope that helps,

Hey Hope4goodsleep1 and andrewroland – thanks for sharing your stories on the forum!

Worrying about sleep usually makes sleep more difficult and this can then lead to more worry! What is it about the idea of getting five to six hours (or sometimes less) of sleep that seems to generate anxiety? Usually, the best way to react to difficult nights is not to react since our reactions are often unhelpful and can perpetuate the sleep disruption.

This may sound like I’m oversimplifying my solution, but I turned a corner for the better when I began to manage my anxiety by saying, “so what, what’s the worst thing that can happen” when a negative thought about sleep crept up. When my relationship with my anxious thoughts changed, I began to experience better and better sleep. Have you tried this technique?

    Hope that helps,
    Scott J

Excellent news, Suellalan! Progress is progress and proof that you haven’t lost the ability to sleep!

If you’re not anxious or frustrated by the wakefulness, have you considered continuing to lie in bed as long as it’s pleasurable? If you’re determining your “back to bed” time by watching the clock, have you tried just gauging your sleepiness by head nodding and dozing as indicators to return to bed?

    Hey @Tired587!

Welcome to the forum! I wouldn’t consider this much different than, say, beginning a fitness routine for better health or diet to lose weight – at first, you may find it difficult to remain committed and you’re not sure what you’re doing will have any benefits but if you remain committed and have some patience, you’ll see positive results. Some of the advice in the program may seem counterintuitive, but I’ve (and many others on this forum) who’ve remained vigilant with these evidence-based techniques have successfully overcome their sleep disruption.

I hope that helps and I hope to see you back on hear to share your success story with us!
