did free course and now 6 week course…the paradox…

      hey all
      I found Martin’s free course, podcasts and you tube videos very useful and it helped me through one stage of insomnia. Its now back and im considering doing the 6 week course…BUT…

      Martin has mentioned a few times the perils of spending too much time researching sleep and trying to fix it. This makes a lot of sense and im definitelty guilty as charged- i do tend to over obsess and get involved with trying to find solutions online.
      Isn’t there a danger of also doing too much of that embarking on a 6 week course? Wouldn’t it potentially cause us to put much time and energy on it, especially with its seperate exclusive forum and especially as we have spent the money.
      Not trying to be a smart ass, just genuinely seeing the paradox and really keen to make some progress in my insomnia issues

        Do what is best for you. I know some people have had insomnia for years, some of them says 20 years. I had two years of insomnia before I found the 2 week free course but what a difference it made. I learned to quit worrying about sleep and know now it wont kill me, just go on with life and sleep will come eventually. I also know I will have bad nights from time to time. Martin says we have bad days and we have bad nights. Thankfully I have not had many bad nights now for the past year. At one point I thought I would never sleep again but Martin let me know I am not alone and that yes I would sleep. If I dont sleep good one night, I dont get all crazy about it now, I know my sleep drive will catch up with me and I will sleep.

          Great question!

          My six-week course actually focuses on how to move away from trying to make a certain amount or type of sleep happen and how to build skill in experiencing whatever sleep shows up (and whatever thoughts and feelings show up — day or night) in a way that doesn’t create more difficulty and struggle.

          So, there is still energy and effort required — but it’s not being directed toward sleep. It’s being directed toward workable action.

          The idea is this — the less we try to control sleep, the best opportunity it has to take care of itself. The less we try to control our minds, the best opportunity we have to live the life we want to live, no matter what thoughts and feelings show up.

          In effect, all this stuff becomes more like water off a duck’s back. It no longer consumes our focus and attention. We get to live the life we want to live and sleep gets to take care of itself.

            For me, the course calmed me down… Instead of the whole internet giving me a wide range of information — total doom and gloom info overload, the course was something I looked forward to… More of a “what are we going to learn today?” approach. Its focused POSITIVE information that gives hope.
