How are you getting on Sarahjoy? Have you been able to explore any ways you might be able to act in ways that are aligned with your values and that keep you moving toward the kind of life you want to live even when things are really difficult?

Perhaps that might help shift some of your mind’s focus away from all this difficult stuff — not to get rid of it or to shrug it off (difficult stuff is difficult and it’s real), but to help you do more of the things that matter even when all this difficult stuff is present.

Hello Dewina. Things sounds really difficult for you. When things are hard it becomes really important to practice some self-kindness. To acknowledge that things are difficult and to talk and act kindly toward yourself.

Unfortunately there’s not a whole lot we can do about our energy levels — we can’t magically make energy appear (just as we can’t magically make sleep happen).

What we can do (in addition to being kind to ourselves when things are difficult) is to act in ways that are aligned with our values and do things that keep us moving toward the kind of life we want to live (no matter how small those actions might be).

Have you tried experimenting with any of the things discussed on this website or in my free sleep training course that might help you move away from any behaviors that might be making sleep more difficult?

Nothing unusual there, JohnV — especially in the early days! How are you getting on since you posted? How are you currently responding to the appearance of anxiety and how effective is that approach proving to be?

If you feel you should get professional help, I would suggest talking to your doctor.

What you have described is difficult, but not unique or unusual. It sounds as though you are a bit tangled up in the same way that others with chronic insomnia are. In other words, you are a bit stuck right now — but you are NOT broken!

Your post reminded me of my discussion with Jennifer — she traced her insomnia back to weaning her children from breastfeeding:

How Jennifer moved past 18 years of insomnia by exploring her sleep-related beliefs and recognizing her own insomnia in the stories of others (#33)

I hope there’s something useful here!

Hello chay and welcome to the forum. It sure sounds as though you’ve made a lot of progress, acting in ways that are more aligned with the person you want to be and the life you want to live.

Since you mentioned that so much of your focus is currently on sleep, how might you shift that focus, do you think? How might you open your attention up to more of what’s around you and doing more of the things that matter to you?

Yikes, I feel exhausted and fatigued on many days — and I sleep well 🙂

When you had no concern about sleep, were you tracking your sleep so closely? If not, why start now? If you find that trying to track your sleep is making things more difficult then you might want to move away from doing so. Many people find that it isn’t helpful — you aren’t alone there!

Are you currently following any kind of sleep window? How are you getting on with it?

If you are finding it hard to fall asleep then you might be going to bed before you are sleepy enough for sleep, might be putting pressure on yourself to sleep, might be trying to avoid wakefulness, and/or might be trying to fight or get rid of the thoughts and feelings that might choose to show up at that time.

If insomnia has only just showed up, it’s likely that it will go away all by itself. I think a good way to respond to short-term insomnia is to go to bed when you feel sleepy enough for sleep and to get out of bed in the morning at a reasonably consistent time.

You might want to see if you can avoid making any changes in an attempt to make sleep happen or to chase after sleep since it’s all the effort we put into sleep that provides insomnia with the oxygen it needs to survive.

Thanks for sharing so many insights in your post, kho:

“Concerning the nights when I can’t sleep at all, I think those are the nights I put most pressure on my self to sleep…”

How might you move away from putting pressure on yourself to sleep, do you think?

“Even if I’m trying to convince myself that it doesn’t matter if I sleep or not, my brain doesn’t really believe it because what I often feel when I can’t sleep or if I wake up during the night is disappointment and sadness of not being able to sleep.”

That makes sense since we can’t control our minds — and your brain will always generate thoughts and feelings about things of concern (or potential concern). Instead of trying to control your thoughts and feelings, perhaps acknowledging and making space for them to come and go as they please might help you practice moving away from struggling with them?

You will always care about sleep and how you feel — trying not to only sets you up for struggle! I wonder what effect it might have to do things (no matter how small) that help you live a life that’s aligned with your values and that keep you moving toward the life you want to live even after difficult nights and even when difficult thoughts and feelings might be present?

“What is improvement? What to look for in early stages?”

Since insomnia is, ultimately, a struggle problem, perhaps practicing actions that help you move away from struggle might be a good goal to have? Actions you can control — outcomes you cannot 🙂

I couldn’t agree more — so much of our struggle as human beings comes from trying to control what we think and how we feel, and not being kind to ourselves when things are difficult.
