Hello Dani! Can you tell us a bit more about why you’re having a hard time wrapping your mind around the concept of a sleep window? I’d love to provide more clarity if I can!

In terms of it “working” I think that depends on your goal. If you implement a sleep window, what would your goal be?

Thank you for sharing and for your kind words!

Quite often, doing things that matter and living your life regardless of how you feel and how you sleep is something a lot easier said than done!

Would you be willing to share how you were able to actually commit to making changes there — and whether that was an easy change to make, or whether it was actually quite challenging?

What were your goals when you tried meditation and when you tried consciously connected breathing and Vipassana? I wonder if your goals were the reason why those things didn’t seem to work?

How long have you been implementing a sleep window of 5.5 hours? As you pointed out, that’s already quite short — if you were to reduce it any further I wouldn’t suggest going below 5 hours.

PS: It’s OK to spend time awake at night — wakefulness is a normal part of sleep and usually becomes a problem only when we try to fight or avoid it 🙂

Thank you for returning with an update!

When we put more things in front of us by doing things that are rich and meaningful, we expand our focus and open ourselves up a bit, right?

Instead of concern about wakefulness and all the thoughts and feelings that can come with it blocking our view of the world around us, we might start to notice more of the good stuff and be better able to move toward the kind of life we want to live and the person we want to be.

And, in turn, concerns about sleep might just start to fade into the background — just as you described!

Thanks for sharing, Czor! It sounds as though you’ve moved away from struggling with sleep and it being the focus of your life and moved toward expanding your focus and attention by doing things that are important and meaningful to you. As a result, it sounds as though you are feeling better and doing better, too!

I wonder if reaching for the medication when you wake during the night might be training your brain to believe that wakefulness is a threat that it needs to be alert to protect you from (after all, if it wasn’t a threat why would you be trying to avoid it?) — and that, in turn, might be making it more difficult to fall back to sleep?

What would you be doing differently with your life if you weren’t waking at 4:30 AM — if you were sleeping right through the night, getting the exact amount and type of sleep you’d like to be getting?
