★ AdminWith a rich and meaningful life come difficult thoughts, difficult feelings, and disrupted sleep! Is it possible to live the kind of life we want to live, to achieve meaningful things, and do things that matter without the presence of all the difficult stuff that comes with it?
Can parents experience a life without anxiety? Can doctors experience a life without stress? Can athletes experience a life without pressure? Probably not — but people who choose to be parents, who choose to be doctors, who choose to be athletes are still living the kind of life they want to live, even in the presence of those difficult feelings.
I wonder if refocusing on being in Europe, doing work that (hopefully!) you find meaningful might be helpful here. Only you can decide if your current career is something that keeps you moving toward the kind of life you want to live and the person you want to be — if it’s not, then perhaps it might be worth exploring a change there?

★ AdminHello Sue!
Do you ever have a difficult day after a run of great days? If so, is your response to that difficult day any different from how you respond to a difficult night that happens after a run of great nights?
If so, might there be an insight there?

★ AdminOften, when it comes to anxiety, the struggle comes not from the presence of anxiety — but from all our attempts to fight or avoid it.
If you only allowed yourself to sleep in your own home, what do you think would end up happening?
On the first night, how much sleep do you think you might get? What about on the second night? What about the fifth night? How about the seventh night? Do you think some kind of sleep might happen by the seventh night if you don’t allow yourself to sleep anywhere other than your own home? If so, what might that suggest?

★ AdminGood on you for giving it a try! As Chee suggested, it usually takes more than one night for a sleep schedule change to yield any results or meaningful information — many people experience a bit more sleep disruption as their brains remain a bit more alert in the short term to monitor for the effect of the change.
Sleep restriction isn’t universally helpful for everyone, just as you suggested! If you’ve found a more workable approach that’s proving helpful, great! No need to explore sleep restriction any further!

★ AdminA few more questions!
Before you had any concerns about sleep, what time did you usually get out of bed to start your day?
Are you finding it easy to remain awake for the start of your sleep window at 12:30 AM at the current time?
Do you check the time when you wake during the night?
If you were getting the amount and type of sleep you desire, what would you be doing differently with your life?

★ AdminThat would be something to discuss with your doctor. I don’t recommend any sleeping pills or supplements since sleep doesn’t need medication or supplements to happen. I would always defer to the professional opinion of your doctor, though — and if you find medication helpful then who am I to suggest you do anything different?!

★ AdminIf that sounds like a workable approach, great! If it doesn’t seem to be getting you where you want to be in terms of living the kind of life you want to live then I wonder if it might help to shift some of that focus and attention on doing things that are important, rich, and meaningful?
I wonder if that kind of approach might help you reach your goal of getting your life back — or at least a bit closer to how you’d like it to be?

★ AdminThanks for the great questions!
1. I would suggest discussing your desire to move away from medication with your doctor. I don’t think you necessarily need to wait until you are no longer taking medication before implementing a sleep window but if you have any concerns about this, it would be best to seek medical advice.
2. Feel free to start with a 6 hour sleep window. If you’re feeling really confident and committed, by all means go for a 5 hour window. Whichever you feel most comfortable with and feel you can stick to for at least a week.
3. I’d suggest starting by choosing an out of bed time that you feel would work for you. Something that fits in with the life you want to live and is something you feel able to commit to. Then, count back the duration of the sleep window you chose to get your earliest possible bedtime.
4. You can do whatever you like! If giving yourself 15 minutes or so at the end of your sleep window to get out of bed feels really helpful to you, feel free to continue doing just that! If those extra 15 minutes don’t really seem to do much for you, perhaps you might spend those 15 minutes doing something else, out of bed, instead.
5. Where you sleep is a personal decision. You might want to decide where you want to be sleeping over the long term and then perhaps commit to only allowing yourself to sleep in that place.
I hope this helps!

★ AdminI think surgery (and perhaps billions of other things!) can definitely trigger sleep disruption!
If we still find sleep difficult when the initial trigger was long ago and/or it’s no longer relevant, that can be down to all our efforts to make sleep happen and to fight or avoid wakefulness (and all the difficult thoughts and feelings that often come with it).

★ AdminThanks for sharing that analogy, Capt Dave Man!
@Ladysarah1985 – The nights that throw me badly are the ones it just doesn’t make sense.Perhaps it doesn’t need to make sense and it’s the pursuit of trying to make sense out of something that doesn’t always make sense that could be the distraction here?
