It is possible to wean off of Ambien — and the process would probably start by discussing your desire to move away from medication with your doctor.
You might also find these podcast episodes helpful since they involve people who moved away from Ambien in particular:
How Jim stopped chasing after sleep and put over 10 years of insomnia behind him (#42)
I hope this helps!

Martin Reed★ AdminHello JV! Welcome and thank you for your kind words 🙂
As you shared, anxiety can show up in so many ways — as thoughts, as feelings, and as physical sensations just as you described.
With that being said, if you are concerned about any of the symptoms you listed, I would encourage you to talk to your doctor. If nothing else, it might help relieve some of the understandable concern those symptoms might be causing you.

Martin Reed★ AdminThis would be outside my area of expertise and, since you know your goddaughter best, I suspect you would be the best person to figure out how to explain what you know about dealing with insomnia in a helpful way 🙂
Letting go typically involves acknowledging what we are thinking and feeling — allowing it to sit with us or to float next to us like a beach ball — rather than trying to fight or avoid it. Observing rather than fighting. When we try to push a beach ball under the water because we don’t want it next to us, what happens? If we just let it float alongside us, what happens?
I hope this helps. And, when it comes to spending time with a toddler that doesn’t sleep well — perhaps spending that time with the little one is a greater contributor to living a rich and meaningful life than how you might sleep during that time?

Martin Reed★ AdminMany people find things temporarily get more difficult when they make changes to their approach — so you aren’t alone there!
In my experience, I don’t think there’s any need to get out of bed just because you’re awake — unless you want to! What I feel is more important is responding in a different way to wakefulness whenever you find yourself struggling with being awake. I think it’s the ongoing struggle with being awake that is the real issue — not being awake in bed, as tends to be the opinion within mainstream CBT-I.
With all this being said, I am a coach and not a therapist! And, your therapist knows more about you than I do (although you still remain the expert on yourself)! Have you shared your concerns about getting out of bed when awake with your CBT-I therapist?

Martin Reed★ AdminIt’s hard to come up with timelines since everyone is different and many people define “effectiveness” and “success” in different ways.
A sleep window is just one tool that can help us move away from chasing after sleep. Although some people find that a sleep window is all they need, other areas often need to be explored (such as how we respond to being awake during the night and how we deal with the difficult thoughts and feelings that often show up with insomnia).
A sleep window can easily become a sleep effort if used in an attempt to make a certain amount or type of sleep happen — and, as you likely know from experience, the more effort we put into sleep the more elusive and difficult it can seem to become!
As you shared, this is often a marathon and not a sprint. And you cannot control the outcome you are looking to reach — you can only control your ongoing practice and implementation. Things that will move you closer to where you want to be.
I wish you all the best on your journey. It sounds as though you have the mindset, attitude, and strengths to succeed 🙂

Martin Reed★ AdminAh yes, turning on the news might not always be helpful!!!
A podcast cannot make sleep happen, but if it helps you experience being awake with less struggle, it might be a more helpful option!

Martin Reed★ AdminSleep paralysis can happen in the presence of insomnia and without the presence of insomnia.
Sleep paralysis can be scary but it’s not usually a symptom of a medication condition. With that being said, sleep paralysis isn’t my area of expertise so if it’s of concern, I would suggest talking to your doctor.
This information from the Cleveland Clinic might be helpful, too: https://my.clevelandclinic.org/health/diseases/21974-sleep-paralysis

Martin Reed★ AdminThere can be no doubt that the exhaustion, fear, anxiety, nervousness and all the other thoughts and feelings that often come with insomnia are really difficult to experience.
Those thoughts and feelings can also influence our actions in unhelpful ways — we can find ourselves acting in ways that we don’t want to act, we can find ourselves getting pulled away from the life we want to live.
When we are struggling with insomnia it can be so much harder to be the person we want to be and to focus on the world around us.
Did you pick up any ideas or insights from the free insomnia sleep training course? Did it help you identify any potential changes you might make that could potentially change your current situation and relationship with sleep?

Martin Reed★ AdminSorry to hear of the lack of support you faced when things were so difficult for you.
I am so glad to hear you feel you’ve now found some support and feel more understood. Although it probably felt like it, you were never alone — and you certainly are not alone today.
I wish you all the best with the new path you find yourself on 🙂

Martin Reed★ AdminThanks for sharing — and I agree, all the “good stuff” when it comes to insomnia tends to be buried under all the unhelpful stuff such as scary and misleading health-related headlines and the typical sleep hygiene articles. I wish you all the best on your journey 🙂

Martin Reed★ AdminYou are not alone and it makes sense that with a touring lifestyle, some form of sleep disruption might accompany that. In what ways do you find your sleep is disrupted and how do you respond when you are in bed and awake when you want to be asleep?

Martin Reed★ AdminThank you so much for sharing! It’s totally natural for all those human thoughts and feelings to show up when difficult nights show up. What matters is how you respond!
It sounds as though you are holding those thoughts and feelings more lightly than you might have done in the past — and that you are also experiencing them with a bit more curiosity rather than immediately reaching for the sword, suit of armor, and heading into battle. It also sounds as though you are being a lot kinder to yourself, too.
Not only are those changes a reflection of your progress, they also demonstrate your growth mindset.
As you shared, frustration and fear is natural and normal. And, it takes ongoing practice to be able to respond to difficult thoughts and feelings (and difficult nights) in a workable way that doesn’t get us tangled up in more struggle, more difficultly, and pull us away from the life we want to live.
Your problem-solving mind is pumped after a lifetime of working out — your wise mind is playing catchup. However, with ongoing practice, it’ll continue to get stronger 🙂
