    i'm interested in doing a sleepy study. it sounds like it could be very useful to me. one of my best friends took her kid for a sleep study as the kid was suffering from some sleep apnea, and the results were illuminating. they discovered that even aside from the sleep apnea (the kid has unusually large tonsils and has since been scheduled for surgical removal), their brain woke them up 5 times an hour. combined with the sleep apnea caused by the breathing trouble, and it was a whopping 13 times an hour. the poor kid was never able to fall into deep, restful sleep. naturally, they were suffering from health trouble–cognitive trouble, attention-deficit, behavioural issues, etc.

    the downside is i understand it can be quite expensive. something like 3 grand, in this case. i'll have to check with my insurance and see what it's going to be like for me.

    Yikes that does sound pricey. What are you hoping or interested in discovering with the sleep study? Are you concerned you may have sleep apnea? Do you think more specific data on your sleep habits could help you sleep?

    You chose the right place to post – so don't worry about that!

    Getting up during the night to pee sometimes affects me, too. Normally I am OK getting back to sleep but if something is on my mind my brain will go into overdrive again and I'll struggle to get back to sleep. I find that if I drink anything within about 3 hours of going to bed, I'll be up during the night. Therefore, I avoid all liquids for quite a while before I hit the sack.

    As for the bladder burning; you should probably speak with your doctor about that.

    Apparently dark chocolate and whey protein isolate contain tryptophan. Probably not in particularly high doses but it may be worth investigating:

    When we left New York, our original expectation was to end up living in San Francisco. I had been there before and loved it, as had my wife. We also have friends that live there.

    When we got there we rented a car for a month and did a lot of travelling up the coast all the way to Seattle. The stops in between (and the journey in general) convinced us that we were done with city life.

    Well, at least for now!

    I really don't think there are any positives to insomnia, other than one insomniac is probably the only person who really can understand another insomniac and therefore is able to show real empathy.

    What about the other suggestions for 'positive' aspects offered by other members? Do you agree with any of those? Insomnia can be tough, and it can be very difficult to look for any positives. Sometimes it can help to dig, though. If only to help you cope.
