    Hello Peter

There's no doubt that sleeping pills are EASY. Pop one or two, and pass right out. As you know, the problem is two-fold: sleeping pills are addictive, and they don't cure insomnia!

Reading your story, one thing becomes clear – you are capable of sleep. You've proved it to yourself a few times. You haven't lost that ability.

Well the rains have finally arrived, so it'll probably be like this until around June time!

I always try to get people who struggle with sleep to avoid calling themselves insomniacs – when you call yourself an insomniac, it kind of becomes a self-fulfilling prophecy.

At the same time, it's difficult to describe insomnia to others without using the word. That being said, even then it is misunderstood.

If you have to label yourself, I would suggest you refer to yourself as a healthy, happy individual who sometimes gets less sleep than she'd prefer!

Hi Kate, thanks for saying hello!

It looks as though you figured out how to get to the CES discussion – if not, here's a direct link:

    http://www.insomnialand.com/topic/654-ces-devices-alpha-stim-or-ces-ultra/

I think your question is one of the biggest issues insomnia sufferers face – simply because the term 'insomnia' is overused, so it isn't taken as seriously as it should be.

Healthy sleepers have one bad night of sleep, and blame 'insomnia'. The fact is, most people don't understand how debilitating long term sleep deprivation can be – apart from members of this website, that is.

I hope you'll keep in touch and get involved in the forums. You'll find that the more you put in, the more you'll get out.

Hi Gegatso – I split your post away from the 'Changing of the Seasons' thread to its own topic to give it a bit more visibility.

I am not hugely familiar with cranial electrotherapy stimulation devices. In 2011 I wrote a post over on the blog but I've not seen too much in the way of independent scientific studies. I would imagine that's also why your doctor won't write you a prescription – but please let me know if he or she gave another reason.

Did your neighbor find it effective for insomnia, or another condition such as stress/anxiety etc?

I know that one member, dutchsailor, tried hypnotherapy. I don't think it worked for him, but I've reached out to him to see if he'll contribute to this thread.

Are you going for an initial consultation, or an actual session?

Yeah, I am guessing that's proprietary to help differentiate between brands. They're probably all quite similar, though.

A reduction of 50mg is great progress – don't put yourself down! Glad you're seeing the benefits already.

I've not heard of Mellodyn before, but I have heard good things about SerenitePlus which looks as though it's a competing product.

in reply to: Has anyone tried using Ashwagandha for insomnia? #14833
    Martin Reed
    ★ Admin

Good find! I'll shoot this one out in the next insomniac bulletin to see if anyone else can chime in.

Ashwagandha is known as an adaptogen. It works by regulating the production of cortisol, which can reduce stress. Once again, there’s the assumption that stress is the cause of your insomnia (this isn’t always the case). If stress is an issue for you, though, adaptogens could be worth looking into.

Other herbs include American ginseng, Eleuthero, Jiaogulan, Rhodiola and Schisandra.
