Welcome to Insomnia Land, Chris – and thanks for the great introduction.

Through your experience, I think you have learnt one thing – you are capable of sleep. Indeed, even now you say you're still suffering from insomnia, but only 'at least once every 2 months'.

Of course, one episode is bad enough, but this is at least proof that you can sleep, and your body (and mind) is able to shut down, relax and fall asleep naturally.

Every single member of Insomnia Land has your back now you've joined our little community. We're all here to help and support one another – together, I am sure we'll help you continue to improve your sleep.

If you are ready to stop struggling with insomnia you can enroll in the online insomnia coaching course right now! If you would prefer ongoing phone or video coaching calls as part of a powerful three month program that will help you reclaim your life from insomnia, consider applying for the Insomnia Mastery program.

Welcome aboard, Capt Bryan – love the thread title, by the way!

I think a lot of insomnia sufferers suffer from breathing problems during the night without even realizing it:

    http://www.insomnialand.com/blog/is-your-insomnia-caused-by-sleep-apnea/

Unfortunately, the only real 'solution' to sleep apnea is the CPAP machine – and like you say, many people have difficulty with it. Being wired up to a bulky machine is hardly the ideal recipe for a deep, relaxing sleep.

I can't even imagine how disappointing it must have been to have gone through all that reconstruction surgery to only experience a minor improvement in your sleep.

Hopefully with the help of other members here we can help continue your journey towards a healthier, improved sleep.

Welcome to the forum, thaggs. Did anything happen in 1999 to trigger your insomnia or did it appear to come from nowhere?

I am sure you'll find plenty of helpful advice and information here in the forums – it may take some digging, but there is a lot of great information in here that has all been shared by others who know what you're going through.

Keep in touch, and I look forward to reading more of your posts and getting to know you.

Thanks for sharing the tips you've found helpful so far, and I hope you'll continue to share your experiences with all of us.

    Hello all!

I am new to Insomnia Land but am SO happy to have found this community. I am a 24 year old (and otherwise healthy) girl and I've been suffering with chronic Sleep Maintenance Insomnia since 2005 as a result of multiple TBI's (Traumatic Brain Injuries ie concussions). It's steadily gotten worse throughout the years and I am currently unmedicated and logging 4 hours of sleep max at night.

I have a sleep study next week, I have a wonderful neurologist, pulmonologist, therapist, chiropractor, and acupuncturist, and I have a wonderful support group of friends and family…

Welcome to Insomnia Land. First of all there's no reason to feel alone anymore – everyone here know's what you're going through when it comes to sleep deprivation.

How did the sleep study go? Any helpful findings or feedback?

Here's a good starting point (be sure to also check out the source link):

    http://www.insomnialand.com/blog/free-cognitive-behavioral-therapy-techniques-for-insomnia/

You're basically on the money – it's a combination of sleep hygiene and changing the way you think about (and approach) sleep.

Owl2020 gives a good overview (thanks). It would be good if any other members who have tried CBT (either professionally or 'Do It Yourself' style') can chime in here, too:

    * What are the components of CBT?

    * Did CBT work for you? If so, which parts?

Any other thoughts or experiences related to CBT would also be helpful – not just for jessallie, but for all Insomnia Land members.

I'm not a big supporter of melatonin supplements:

You ask a good question though – I'll fire this out in the next Insomniac Bulletin so hopefully some other members will share their thoughts/experiences.

Thanks for the great discussion topic – I am firmly of the opinion that a number of popular drugs we take are behind many sleep difficulties.

Of course, this doesn't apply to everyone; but I think that sleep disruption as a side-effect of certain drugs needs to be publicized far more than it is right now.

I am actually in the process of putting something together on this for the Insomnia Land blog, so stay tuned. In the meantime, hopefully some other members will chime in with their thoughts.

Welcome to Insomnia Land! How long have you been seeing your sleep therapist for, and how helpful are you finding it so far? I'd love to know more about that as normally we get members who have had a sleep study done, but not gone down the 'sleep therapy' route.

If you could start a new discussion thread about it in the insomnia forum, even better!

    Welcome to the forums, David.

Sleep studies seem to rarely help insomnia sufferers – they simply confirm what we already know (that we struggle with sleep). They rarely give us the 'why'.

Sometimes it helps to trace back the root cause of the insomnia. Did anything happen in your life that triggered your issues with sleep? Are you still on medication right now?

Please do get involved in any discussions that are of interest to you. As I tell all new members, the more you contribute to the forums here, the more you'll get out of them.

I look forward to reading more of your posts and getting to know you better.

First of all, if you ever have thoughts of suicide call the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline on 1-800-273-8255.

Have you spoken to a doctor about your insomnia and how it is affecting you? If not, that should be your first port of call.

I hope you find plenty of support, advice and comfort here. The more you get involved in the forum, the more you'll get out of the forum.

You are capable of sleep. It's built into every single person's DNA. Never doubt that.

Have you signed up for my sleep training course? I am sure it will help improve your sleep.
