Hi Melissa and welcome to Insomnia Land. Thanks for sharing the great story about the hamster – that put a smile on my face!! It's funny, as yesterday I gave someone a ride into town from the supermarket and he was telling me how he had a boa constrictor and would feed it live rabbits.

You sound like a great person and I'm sure you'll fit right in here. Enjoy your stay, and I look forward to getting to know you!

I bet you have a permanent squint from watching movies on your iPhone!! I loved Hobo with a Shotgun! If you have the time, I reckon you might as well get a VPN to connect to the US version of Netflix – the library is probably a lot larger. Having said that, it still lacks many of the newer and more popular releases.

I love movies soooooo much! Law Abiding Citizen was good. But I have to say I love the romantic movies. Love and Basketball is one of my all time favorit movies. I have so many movies my husband is getting mad at me. So now i have to start hiding them when i buy new ones or replace my regular DVDs with blu rays. 😀 He was also a little upset when he found out i accidently had three copies of Good Will Hunting (another good movie)

Maybe you should look into a Netflix subscription as a substitute for DVD purchases!!

    Welcome to Insomnia Land, Meredith!

As you've already noticed, we're a friendly and supportive bunch here and we definitely understand what you say when you refer to feelings of jealousy of a 'sleeping like a baby' spouse – it's actually a very common occurrence, so don't feel bad about it!

Can you trace your insomnia back to the death of your father, or have you been struggling with sleep for as long as you can remember?

Anyway, welcome once again and I look forward to seeing you around the forums.

Interesting stuff – I think I've covered all those (apart from Seriphos) in the blog before. Where did you originally hear about each of them? Do keep us updated!

Thanks for getting this discussion started, Snookie.

I wonder if trawling the local library's collection of audio books could also be an unlikely cure for insomnia?

I find the idea of 'spoken word' CDs particularly interesting since all we normally hear about for insomnia sufferers are 'white noise' tracks, or 'meditation type' tracks. Have you given either of them a try?

I have been using Coffea (a homeopathic remedy) for the last 4 weeks, I am still using my prescription sleeping tablets (Zopiclone), but am finding that after 20 years I am tired of the hang-over effect it has the next day, I also suffer from depression, common side effect of insomnia – so I am seeing a hemeopath next week to see if they can work out a specific remedy for me – I am far to young to be feeling this tired and drained – so here is hoping, I will feedback.

Good luck – please let us know how you get on 🙂

Welcome to Insomnia Land, Snookie! Let us know how the focussed breathing goes – it's a shame that your original doctor didn't offer you anything but sleeping pills.

Since hypnosis has seemed to work well for you, it would be great if you could contribute your experience to this thread on the subject: http://www.insomnialand.com/topic/222-hypnosis/

Thank you for introducing yourself, and I hope to get to know you better as I read more of your posts.

    Take care!

Welcome to Insomnia Land, Alice. Thanks for introducing yourself, and then coming back after taking a browse around the forums. I trust your initial experience of the community was a positive one.

In my research for the Insomnia Land blog, I often come across mentions of insomnia and menopause – yet there seems to be no accepted remedy; it's simply an association and there appears to be no widely accepted cause-effect theory.

If you do speak to your doctor about going onto HRT specifically to see if it helps your sleep, please let us know what happens. I'd be really interested to know what your doctor thinks, and, if you are prescribed HRT, whether it helps you get to sleep. Perhaps you could start a dedicated discussion topic for this in the insomnia forum.

Anyway, I better draw this post to a close. I look forward to reading more of your posts and getting to know you better!

I had a wonderful and unexpected 6 night run of 6+ hours of solid sleep during the past week! I felt amazing and productive and NORMAL during the day! Tonight I was ripped out of a solid sleep at 1am by a horrible nightmare and have been unable to fall back asleep since. I guess I should be thankful for all the sleep I did manage to get in the past week.

Yikes – that was a good run! What did you do to get such a decent amount of sleep? Any lifestyle/medication/routine changes?

Thanks for sharing the link, Jita. Did you try any of the remedies mentioned?

I'm pretty sure you didn't imply that those on prescription drugs should try homeopathy as it's a better treatment option – most of us here are sleep deprived so from time to time we'll take things the wrong way and it looks as though that may be what happened in this instance. In fact, I often write about alternative remedies on the Insomnia Land blog – if only we could find something that worked for all of us, eh?

I'd be interested in hearing from other members on the subject of homeopathic treatments since I think it's something a lot of people have researched.
