Is that a workable goal, do you think? How can you make yourself get at least five hours of sleep without waking during the night?

If you were able to achieve that goal, I am guessing that you probably wouldn’t be enrolled in this course!

So, I wonder whether creating a goal that you cannot actually control, although understandable, might be setting you up for a struggle that can make all this difficult stuff even more difficult?

Perhaps an alternative approach might be useful, like what is shared and explored in this course?

I’d love to hear your thoughts!

    Thanks for sharing.

What time did you usually go to bed at night before sleep was an issue? Sometimes reflecting on our approach when sleep wasn’t a concern can be quite insightful!

Glad to hear it, Dave! I am a big fan of the NOW exercise, too — with practice it can really help us build skill in remaining more present and focused when the mind tries to pull us away from where we are and what we’re doing!

With that skill, we might be able to do more of what matters (and notice more of the good stuff around us) even when things are difficult.

In turn, that might help us move away from ongoing struggle.

    A few questions:

If you were to change your sleep window, what would your goal be?

What is your current sleep window and how did you choose the start and end times?

Is there a possibility that you might be trying to control sleep (something that cannot be directly or permanently controlled)? If so, might that be creating some additional struggle?

When you wake at 1:00 AM or 3:00 AM (or at any other time of the night for that matter!) how do you currently respond?

Welcome aboard, Donika! Totally natural and normal to feel stuck — to get unstuck we might need to explore (and implement) a new approach.

Since it sounds as though the approach you were pursuing before you enrolled on this course wasn’t getting you where you want to be, have you picked up any ideas on how you might change your approach, even at this very early stage of the course?

    Thanks for sharing!

It’s normal to have lots of thoughts in your mind when you wake — and at any other time of the day or night. That’s your brain, doing its job and looking out for you! We’ll be exploring how we respond to those thoughts as the course progresses 🙂

It sounds as though you’ve learned that you are capable of generating good nights of sleep and that practicing the 3 Good Things exercise is helping you expand your focus onto things other than sleep!

    You’re off to a great start 🙂

As you might have learned from the Week 1 content of the course, you don’t need to keep a sleep diary or track your sleep in any way!

In terms of doing the right thing, what is your current approach to nighttime awakenings and is that working for you?

Sorry to hear about the respiratory infection. Your experience doesn’t sound unique or unusual — although it is, of course, difficult!

With sleep, the more we get involved in the process, the more difficult it often becomes. With difficult thoughts and feelings like anxiety, the more we try to fight or avoid them, the more difficult they often become.

What’s your current plan of action for improving your current situation, other than keeping a sleep log?

Thanks for sharing all those examples of how you’re approaching sleep!

Does your approach toward doing things each day that are aligned with your values, that are important to you, and that keep you moving toward the life you want to live — independently of sleep and even in the presence of difficult thoughts and feelings — get at least as much attention?

Yes, thoughts are thoughts — and they can also be really difficult to experience sometimes!

I wonder whether part of moving away from struggling with them and being more accepting of them might involve not only observing them, but also moving away from labeling them as “negative” or “positive”?

All your thoughts come from your brain doing its job and looking out for you — and without them, you wouldn’t be alive today. Labeling them in such a way might end up pulling you into more of a struggle since “negative” implies something is bad and must be fought or avoided 🙂

The timeline of “realizing” when you’re getting tangled up in your thoughts doesn’t matter too much — what matters is how you respond when you do realize it’s happening!

Thanks for sharing! It sounds as though you’ve been finding it helpful to go back to approaching each night in a way that’s more aligned with how you did things before sleep became a concern. As you continue to move away from chasing after sleep, you continue to create better conditions for sleep to happen!

As you know from experience, there’s no magic sleep switch. The more we look for it, the more likely we are to get tangled up in a struggle and the more likely we are to get distracted from doing things that matter.

It’s impossible to say how you should expect sleep to be for the rest of your life or when you should expect to start falling asleep earlier.

That might be a bit like wondering how you should expect to breathe for the rest of your life or when you should expect to take fewer breaths in the morning and more breaths at night!

Of course, you want to get a certain amount and type of sleep. And, you would probably love to experience each day without any tiredness or fatigue. All that is out of your control, though — and, from your own experience, where does trying to control what cannot be controlled get you?

In terms of whether you should go to bed later, what would be your intent with that? Are you still getting drawn toward trying to control sleep? There’s no need to make yourself go to bed later unless you are finding yourself deliberately going to bed earlier in an effort to chase after sleep. What we’re looking to do here is move away from trying to control sleep since that creates a struggle that makes everything more difficult!

    Is there anything useful here?

It sounds as though you are responding to this difficult stuff in a more workable way — you are acknowledging it and continuing to do things that keep you moving toward the kind of life you want to live.

As you mentioned, sometimes difficult thoughts might disappear when you do things that matter — and yet, they’ll always come back at some point since the human brain is a thought-generating machine!

Trying to get rid of your thoughts probably only creates more struggle — there’s no delete button for the brain (as you probably know from experience).

A more helpful goal might involve continuing to do things that matter to you, even when difficult stuff shows up. To expand the focus of your attention, to do what’s important, and to be kind to yourself when things are hard.

You might want to review the actions plans for prior weeks to see if there’s anything in them you feel might be worth practicing.

Discouragement is natural and normal, especially if you are trying to control what cannot be controlled (such as sleep, what you think, how you feel). You always get to choose how to respond to that discouragement 🙂

I hope there’s something useful here.

For as long as your goal is to quell or control your thoughts or feelings, perhaps you are hitting that big red button labeled “STRUGGLE” — and that, in turn, is making everything more difficult?
