Welcome to the forum, SK! I have a feeling that for as long as your goal is to stop your racing and anxious thoughts, you might remain tangled up in a struggle — because, at the end of the day, we can’t control the things our mind does!

Perhaps more helpful would be learning to make space for difficult thoughts and feelings to exist instead. To prevent them from distracting you and sweeping you away. That way, over time, they might have less of an influence over you!

If you are ready to stop struggling with insomnia you can enroll in the online insomnia coaching course right now! If you would prefer ongoing phone or video coaching calls as part of a powerful three month program that will help you reclaim your life from insomnia, consider applying for the Insomnia Mastery program.

In my experience working with clients, sleeping pills don’t make a whole lot of difference.

Some clients go cold turkey from day one, others taper off while we are working together, others don’t make any changes until they graduate. The only time I see them being an issue is when clients take them contingently — based on how they sleep from night to night.

Of course, it’s important not to make any changes to your medication without talking to your doctor first.

Trying to make yourself feel calm sounds like it might be a bit of a struggle — when we try to control what we think or how we feel, we are engaged in a battle with our mind. How likely are we to sleep if we are engaged in a battle, I wonder?

    I’ve got news for you:

Not one human being on earth can control their sleep.
Not one human being on earth can control their thoughts.
Not one human being on earth can control their feelings.

Imagine what life would be like if you shifted away from trying to control all the stuff that can’t be controlled? What kind of energy would that free up, and what might you be able to do with all that freed up energy?

I hope there’s something useful here — and thank you for your kind words!

If you’ve been living with insomnia since 2019 and haven’t been using Rocephin since 2019 it’s unlikely that drug is the reason why you are experiencing these issues with sleep.

Far more likely is the change in your sleep-related behaviors and the relationship you have with the difficult thoughts and feelings that often like to come along for the ride.

If you think exploring this might be helpful, I’d suggest working through my free insomnia sleep training course. If you have any questions as you go through the course, please feel free to share them here!

When you wake during the night (which is a normal part of sleep) why do you think you find it hard to fall back to sleep?

In terms of your body functioning at high speeds, if you were being chased by a bear and your only route of escape was up a rock, would you be able to scramble up that rock or would you simply lie at the bottom of the rock and wait to be mauled?

If someone you love has just been kidnapped and you have to run across town to save them, would you be able to do that or would you have to leave them to their fate?

Our thoughts can be strong and feel like absolute facts. That’s not always the case, though! Recognizing thoughts for what they are (thoughts) can help lift a barrier that might be preventing us from living the kind of life we want to live.

I would suggest going with whatever out of bed time feels most “workable” and appropriate for you.

    These questions might help:

If you never gave sleep a second thought and you got the exact amount and type of sleep you wanted, when do you think you’d be getting out of bed in the morning to start your day?

What kind of out of bed time could you commit to and what kind of out of bed time would help you do the things you want to do, live the life you want to live, and be the person you want to be?

Thanks for sharing! Something else that can help when it comes to becoming more of an observer of our thoughts (rather than getting tangled up in a battle with them) is to add the phrase, “I am having the thought that” onto the start of any difficult thoughts we have.

As an example, our response to these two thoughts might be a bit different:

    1. “I am never going to sleep tonight and tomorrow will be awful”
    2. “I am having the thought that I am never going to sleep tonight and tomorrow will be awful”

Accepting what we don’t have control over and focussing attention on what we do have control over can be a really helpful strategy!

Over time, it often results in all the stuff we don’t have control over having less of an influence over us — it becomes less prominent in our lives and consumes less of our attention.

And, as a bonus, sleep tends to become a lot easier when we have no involvement in the process, pay it little attention, and don’t put any effort into it!
