Wow! I had a friend who brewed own occasionally. Hope you don't have family in the riot areas. The stuff that is taking place on our planet will keep anyone awake at night!

My step brother is a policeman. He is outside of London but has had his leave canceled and has been drafted down there. The rest of my family are far away from London, thankfully.

I'm no expert, but I've written about CBT a few times on the blog. Whenever I am doing research for blog posts, it seems to be mentioned and appears to be far more effective than any store-bought products. Here are a few posts in particular that spring to mind:

    http://www.insomnialand.com/blog/talking-therapy-is-just-as-effective-as-sleeping-pills-when-treating-insomnia/

    http://www.insomnialand.com/blog/can-online-cognitive-behavioural-therapy-cure-your-insomnia/

There's some good information on the UK's National Health Service website, too:

    http://www.nhs.uk/Conditions/Insomnia/Pages/Treatment.aspx

    I hope this helps.

Wow, I had forgotten about that one! I'm a homebrewer so anytime I see someone drink a liquid (it's not beer) like that, I feel for them. What a waste!!

No apologies are needed (or even accepted) here when it comes to rambling – sometimes it's good to just get things off your chest among people who actually understand what you're going through.

Did your insomnia start when you retired or was it an issue before then? Have you tried visiting a sleep specialist rather than your primary care physician? Have you given Cognitive Behavioral Therapy a try?

Look, you're now a member of Insomnia Land so you're not dealing with your insomnia alone. The burden is shared among our 130+ members. Don't keep things to yourself; share, and you will find support.

I look forward to reading more of your posts and getting to know you better.

That's an interesting question – thanks for posing it to the community. I'll be interested to see if any other members chime in on this one. The only relation to insomnia and numbness I've ever come across is with meningeal compression. I am not sure if this is precisely what you describe, but it could be worth looking into:

Sounds like quite the drug cocktail. I wonder how safe this combination is?

I've actually written about hops on the blog before. This may help: http://www.insomnialand.com/blog/hops-are-the-insomnia-cure-youve-been-hoping-for/

Your post did reignite my curiosity about this subject though, so after a bit more research I wrote another blog post about it (and shared your experiment). Of course, you remain anonymous: http://www.insomnialand.com/blog/hops-insomnia-and-an-experiment/

Personally, I'd rather drink a proper beer (ie not Bud/Millers/Coors) than eat hops in pellet form!

My neighbor, an older gentleman, who also has insomnia lives below me. He can hear me at night pacing the floors. I need my privacy when I go crazy.

I think that's part of the reason why insomnia can destroy marriages. That, and you have to deal with the jealousy of seeing your spouse sleep like a baby, and cope with them not truly being able to understand what you're going through.

After a discussion with my wife last night, I felt the need to add one additional bonus word to describe myself; impatient.

As I've taken the liberty of adding a bonus word, feel free to do the same!
