Sorry to hear that. Are you finding two tablets of Sonata to be completely ineffective then? Or do you prefer to just avoid the pills completely?

After reading some posts here, I started reading 'The hitchhikers guide to the galaxy'.

I'll let you know later how it's coming along but it looks promising…

I haven't read the book, but I wasn't impressed with the movie!

I am currently reading 'How to win friends and influence people' – still gets amazing reviews to this day.

I also downloaded 'The Great Gatsby' and 'To Kill a Mockingbird' as they've been on my reading list for quite some time and I need to get around to reading them!

I am surprised you didn't find any link to insomnia and daylight changes – many studies have found a link between light exposure and insomnia. As for specific season changes, I think these affect people differently – some find the dark winters difficult, others find lengthy daylight hours make sleep nigh-on impossible.

Hopefully we'll get some other members share their thoughts on this one. I'll give this topic a mention in the next insomniac bulletin as I think this is really interesting and something work examining more closely.

    Thanks for getting it started.

what's the sound recorder you bought, btw? i bought an excellent sony for a class that records straight into podcast-ready mp3 format for $50. it seems like just yesterday, the old olympus cassette recorders were $200-400 for a good one!

I picked up a Sony PCM-M10 as it's meant to have the lowest amount of self-noise in its class. We shall see!

We love a good rant here at Insomnia Land! You mentioned that you believe we living in a dictatorship rather than a democracy in your topic title, but don't go into any more detail in your post – feel free to do so. Although we focus on insomnia here, we also like to have discussions about other topics. Even politics isn't off the table!

I haven't checked it out yet – but I'd love to hear the thoughts of any other members who give it a go.

Maybe I can edit your post and publish it on the blog as a review – would that be OK?

I recently bought a sound recorder and have thought about capturing some good nature sounds here in Oregon. Things like the rain, the ocean, waterfalls etc. When I get some good results, I can share them with the Insomnia Land community.

If anyone has any tips or suggestions – ie, what you like or don't like about what's already out there, I can make sure I don't make the same mistakes and offer something that will be genuinely useful for other members.

All this talk kind of reminds me of this blog post from back in July 2010:

    http://www.insomnialand.com/blog/why-insomnia-is-the-ignored-sleep-disorder/

Basically, insomnia treatment is less attractive as billing is done under a psychological code which pay poorly. Compare that to sleep apnea where the treatment typically costs $10,000 and is covered in full by insurance.

That thing looks good, thanks for sharing the link. I personally use these full spectrum bulbs in my home office:

    http://www.amazon.com/Full-Spectrum-Light-Bulb-Fluorescent/dp/B0018OS06S/ref=sr_1_1?s=hpc&ie=UTF8&qid=1298492589&sr=1-1

My wife also uses them in her studio when doing color correction. As soon as I started using these rather than regular energy saving light bulbs, I noticed the difference immediately.

Does anybody think the way they deal with insomnia would change if they were in a different location? Britain is often wet, and I sometimes think that a place with drier night times especially may encourage a more “pro-active” nocturnal life, perhaps transforming perceptions of insomnia from affliction to something that can be negotiated in a more positive way.

That's an interesting one. I've heard of a link between altitude and insomnia – http://www.insomnialand.com/blog/is-high-altitude-to-blame-for-your-insomnia/ – and places where there is more sunshine tend to have a population with fewer sleep problems.

Have you noticed your sleep change when you travel abroad (if applicable)? Some studies have found that vacations don't improve sleep – http://www.insomnialand.com/blog/vacations-may-be-a-cause-of-insomnia/ – and some malaria tablets may cause insomnia, too – http://www.insomnialand.com/blog/vacations-may-be-a-cause-of-insomnia/

First, welcome to Insomnia Land. Is your insomnia directly related to your MS, or do you think it's a side-effect of the medication you're on?

I know that here in the US, there are registered sleep clinics that may be a better option when trying to target your specific lack of sleep. I don't know if there is anything similar in the UK; it could be worth investigating.

There does seem to be a link between MS and sleep disorders. Back in December 2009 I mentioned a study on the Insomnia Land blog that found sleep disorders to be twice as prevalent among those with MS:
