Hey @majordan421, welcome to the forum!

Maybe we could peel the onion back a little and determine what’s going on. What time do you go to bed and wake up in the morning to start your day? What are you doing when you wake in the middle of the night? Are you anxious or frustrated when you have those awakenings? Are you currently implementing CBT-I techniques?

    Welcome to the forum!

Has there been a sudden life change or unexpected stress that might’ve triggered the sleep disruption? What is the biggest challenge you face with sleep – falling asleep, multiple middle of the night awakenings – something else? Since you began implementing CBT-I techniques, have you seen any improvements in your sleep or faced any challenges you may have questions about?

    Hello and welcome!

Building a strong sleep drive can certainly assist in your ability to fall and remain asleep during the night. Exercise is great for creating positive moments during the day by engaging in activities you enjoy, building a strong sleep drive and improving your overall health/fitness but it doesn’t directly generate sleep and, exercising too close to your bedtime can actually have a negative impact. Since your poor sleep experience, have you changed your workout routine and timing of it and seen better results?

Welcome to the forum! It’s great to hear you’re exploring CBT-I to help resolve your sleep concerns. Progress is still progress and as long as you remain committed to the techniques, you’ll continue to experience results!

Staying awake until your sleep window begins can certainly be difficult. Have you experimented with standing while watching TV or walking around inside your home during commercials to help with remaining awake until your window begins?

Hi, welcome to the forum! I’m glad to hear you’re experiencing success with sleep restriction and it’s certainly reasonable to expect some sleep disruption in an environment as you describe. It’s a situation out of your control and I wouldn’t view that as a failure!

    Hi Ahumph!

Welcome to the forum and sharing your story!

A great place to start is to review the information Martin provides on this site under ‘Resources’. He also has a very informative YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCL5LsLUeVA2j_Vsl5625shQ) where he discusses many of the common challenges people face when they experience insomnia and the many benefits of implementing CBT-I. This forum has a wealth of personal experiences and tips from others who have/had insomnia and have used CBT-I as a tool to achieve better sleep. I’m more than happy to assist with strategies or to help answer any questions you may have as you start your CBT-I journey. You’re taking a huge leap forward in restoring your sleep with CBT-I and I think you’ve landed at a solid starting point.

    Hope that helps,

Jake – The one and only! 😉 I’m glad you found the video beneficial!

SleepWorry – keep in mind that once your body processes alcohol, it can actually make it a stimulant which can cause middle of the night awakenings, in addition, to creating an urge to use the restroom!

    SleepWorry,

Relapses can be, understandably, disheartening but don’t give up. Think of smokers who try to quit and how many relapses they may experience before being successful. Just because you had a couple of tough nights of sleep, don’t be so hard on yourself. If you implemented CBT-I techniques to have the success you’ve experienced until now, simply revisit those techniques and

You’ve already proven to yourself that you can be successful at achieving wonderful sleep so I wouldn’t let a couple nights of disruption get you down. I still have an occasional tough night of sleep after overcoming insomnia 2 years ago but I also have CBT-I tools in my back pocket to rely upon when those nights occur. Have you tried executing those methods again when you have a restless night?

    Hope that helps,

    You got this Jake!

Just because you have a tough night of sleep, don’t beat yourself up. Just because last night wasn’t great, doesn’t mean tonight will repeat itself. Continue to engage in positive moments throughout your day and only go to bed when sleepy (head nodding, dozing, etc). The more you think of your sleep issue, the more pressure you put on yourself to sleep that night and the more effort you put into getting a good night’s sleep, the harder sleep becomes. It’s kind of like a school yard bully – the more attention you give him, the more he seeks you out. Just ignore him and he’ll eventually leave you alone.

    Hope that helps,

    Hi Scorpio68,

    Welcome to the forum!

It’s not uncommon for stressful life events to cause a temporary disruption in your sleep but sleep is usually restored to normal once the trigger has passed. When your thoughts and behaviors toward sleep change, your sleep issue can perpetuate itself.

It’s great to hear that you’re not reliant on sleeping meds since we know that medication can’t generate sleep anyway. Have you explored implementing CBT-I techniques that tackle the root cause of insomnia – your thoughts and behaviors? How are you trying to manage your thoughts/anxiety since we aren’t able to turn our thoughts off?
